Ortofon's replacement stylus for the 2M Red moving magnet cartridge, sold singly. An elliptical diamond on Ortofon's own assembly, it clips onto the front of a 2M Red body and puts the cartridge back where it started.

Which Bodies It Belongs On

Ortofon recommends the Stylus 2M Red for three cartridges: the 2M Red, the 2MR Red and the 2M Red Premounted. Those are the bodies it was voiced against, and fitting it to one of them returns the cartridge to its published specification.

Ortofon states that the 2M series styli are interchangeable within three groups: Red, Blue and Silver; Bronze, Black and Black LVB 250; and the two mono variants, 2M Mono and 2M 78. Within a group any of them will fit and work as designed.

The Numbers That Matter at Setup

The diamond is elliptical with an 8/18 µm tip radius. Ortofon quotes dynamic lateral compliance of 20 µm/mN, tracking ability of 70 µm at 315 Hz, an equivalent stylus tip mass of 0.5 mg, and a frequency response of 20 Hz – 20 kHz, held to +3/–1 dB across the band.

Tracking force runs 1.6 to 2.0 g, with 1.8 g recommended. That is the single setting to revisit after fitting, because a fresh assembly need not weigh exactly what a worn one did, and the arm cannot know you changed anything.

How Do You Fit It?

The cartridge stays on the headshell. Pull the old assembly straight off the front of the body — it unclips by hand, with no tool — and press the new one on until it seats. Overhang and offset never move, so tracking force is the only setting to revisit. Worth noting while you have the arm in your hands: because the Red shares its group with the Blue, Ortofon lists the Blue stylus as the upgrade for this body, and a worn Red is the cheapest moment to decide.
