An Elliptical Diamond Follows the Groove More Closely

The 5E carries a polished elliptical diamond with an 8/18 µm tip radius. That narrow front-to-back radius lets the diamond trace groove modulations a spherical tip has to smooth over, so you hear cleaner vocals, more convincing strings, and treble that stays composed instead of turning brittle.

The payoff is clearest where records are hardest to play — the inner grooves on side two, where the last track always lives. Better tracking there means less distortion and less stress on the groove walls.

Step Up to Better Sound Without Replacing Your Cartridge

Ortofon built the OM series around interchangeable styli, and your cartridge body accepts the whole family: 3E, 5E, 10, 20, 30, 40, 78, and D 25 M. So the 5E is a straight replacement whenever you want one — or a starting point.

Fit a Stylus 10 or 20 and you move to a finer elliptical diamond (the 20 is a nude elliptical, with less mass at the tip). Fit a Stylus 30 and you step up to a nude Fine Line profile with an 8/40 µm radius, which digs deeper into groove detail and spreads wear over a longer contact patch. The Stylus 40 sits at the top of the range. Every one of them installs exactly the same way as the 5E.

Do You Need a New Stylus?

Three things tell you it is time:

•       Damage. A bent cantilever, a chipped or missing diamond, or debris you cannot brush away means replace it now — a damaged stylus can permanently damage your record grooves.

•       Hours of play. Ortofon rates its styli for up to 1,000 hours of play with proper care, and closer to 500 hours under DJ use with back-cuing or scratching. A worn diamond stops tracking cleanly long before it looks worn to the naked eye.

•       Age. After roughly five years the elastomer suspension — the small damping ring that holds the cantilever in place — dries out and stiffens. The stylus still plays, but it no longer tracks or sounds the way it did new. Time for a fresh one.

Fitment & Installation

The Stylus 5E is the recommended stylus for the Ortofon OM 5E, Super OM 5, OMP 5E, OMB 5E, and OMT 5E cartridge bodies. It is not the right part for the 2M series, Concorde MkII, VNL, or any of Ortofon’s moving coil cartridges — those use their own styli or are not user-replaceable.

Installation takes about two minutes. With the turntable switched off, hold the cartridge body steady, grip the stylus assembly from both sides, and pull it straight off the front; then press the new one on until it seats. No tools, no alignment, no re-setting the tonearm — just confirm your tracking force is in the 1.5–2.0 g range and allow up to 20 hours of playing time for the new suspension to settle in. If you would rather step up while you are in there, any OM series stylus — 10, 20, 30, or 40 — fits the same body the same way.

Will this fit my cartridge?
