A Record Brush Designed by the Studio Behind Ortofon's Cartridges
The Ortofon Record Brush is a dry record brush, sold each. It was designed by Møller Jensen Innovation and Design — the Danish studio responsible for Ortofon's MC Jubilee, the Kontrapunkt series, the 2M series and the Concorde MkII range.
Cleaning a record before every use extends its life, and the stylus tracking it. Dust left in the groove is not simply pushed aside by a stylus: it is driven into the groove wall under pressure, where it stays.
What It Does, What It's Safe On, and How It Works
Bristles and Materials
Ortofon makes the brush to remove dust and dirt from the record surface before play. The design came from the studio that shapes Ortofon's cartridges, which shows in the handling more than anywhere else — a brush is a thing you hold at an awkward angle over something valuable.
A dry brush lifts loose dust and lowers static before a side. It will not shift fingerprint grease or the mold-release compound a record leaves the press with; both are bonded to the vinyl and need a fluid to release them first.
Used dry it needs nothing else. Used alongside a cleaning fluid it becomes the tool that carries the loosened debris out of the groove, which is what the fluid released it for.
Who Is the Ortofon Record Brush Best For?
- You sweep before every side — the habit that keeps dirt off the stylus rather than in it
- You own an Ortofon cartridge — the same company, and the same design studio behind both
- You care how a tool handles — designed by the studio that shaped the 2M series and the Concorde MkII
- You want to extend stylus life — a clean record is what keeps a diamond reading music rather than grit
- Your records need real cleaning — bonded grime needs a fluid first; the range is in record cleaning solutions
How Do You Use It?
Start the platter turning. Hold the bristles lightly against the spinning record for two or three revolutions, letting the rotation do the work rather than pressing. Draw the brush slowly outward to the edge to lift the collected dust away, then wipe the bristles before putting it down.
Pairs Well With
What most owners of a record brush shop next.
- Record cleaning solutions — fluid loosens what a dry brush cannot lift
- Record cleaning machines — for the deep clean a brush precedes rather than replaces
- Stylus cleaning — the brush that matters as much as this one
- Record cleaning accessories — sleeves and the rest of the kit
On Its Own, or as Part of a Program
A brush works perfectly well on its own, and sweeping before every side is the cheapest habit in vinyl. For even better results it belongs in a full treatment program: a fluid to release what is bonded into the groove, a brush to carry it away, and a stylus cleaner at the other end. The fluids are in record cleaning solutions.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many do I need?
One. The brush is sold each and a second only makes sense beside a second turntable.
Will it clean a dirty record?
It lifts loose dust and lowers static. Grease and pressing residue are bonded to the vinyl and need a cleaning fluid before a brush can carry them off.
Do I have to own an Ortofon cartridge?
No connection at all — it works on any record, on any turntable. Ortofon makes it, and the same studio designed both, but that is the extent of the relationship.
Can I use it with cleaning fluid?
Yes. Used wet, the brush is what carries the debris a fluid has released out of the groove.
