AC-14XL MKII Upgrades to Cardas Grade One Copper
A power cable carries the last few feet of AC from the wall into a component. It can't add power a component doesn't draw, but a poorly shielded one lets noise ride in on that current.
Pangea's original AC-14XL used OFC copper, Long-Crystal Copper and Litz wire; the MKII revision keeps that Litz construction and adds 99.99% purity OFC copper together with solid Cardas Grade One Copper, in a design built around a DeathGrip IEC connector.
From Long-Crystal Copper to Cardas Grade One
Pangea's original AC-14XL design used OFC copper, Long-Crystal Copper and PCOCC. The MKII revision upgrades that conductor mix to 99.99% purity OFC copper, Litz wire, and solid Cardas Grade One Copper.
George Cardas, the designer behind Cardas Audio's own conductors, said of the Cardas Grade One Copper used in this cable: “the most amazing audio conductor I have ever experienced. It is quite simply the best copper on the planet.”
Solid Copper Blades, Screw-In Ground Pin
AC-14XL MKII terminates in solid copper blades, with a screw-in and screw-out solid copper ground pin for a secure connection at the wall, and a DeathGrip IEC connector at the component end, Pangea's own name for its locking, low-resistance IEC termination.
The Connectors, Explained
AC-14XL MKII terminates in a DeathGrip IEC connector, which plugs into the inlet on your amplifier, DAC or other component, and solid copper blades with a screw-in ground pin at the wall end.
Who Is This Power Cable Best For?
- You want Litz-wire construction upgraded with Cardas Grade One Copper — that is the defining change Pangea made in the MKII revision
- You want a locking IEC connection at the component end — the DeathGrip IEC is built specifically for a secure, low-resistance fit
- You want solid copper wall-plug blades with a screw-in ground pin — that construction is standard on AC-14XL MKII
- You are feeding an amplifier or another component with real current demands — the XL gauge steps up from the standard AC-14
- Your component uses the two-pin C7 inlet instead of a three-pin plug — Pangea AC-14SE MKII C7 is the matching Pangea cable for that connector; check your component's inlet before ordering
How Does It Connect to Your System?
Plug the DeathGrip IEC end into the inlet on the back of your amplifier, DAC or other component, and the solid copper blade end into a wall outlet or power conditioner outlet.
Then power up the system as usual. Other and longer lengths available. Call for prices.
Pairs Well With
A power cable is one link in the chain from the wall to your gear. It usually joins these categories.
- Power Conditioners — filter the whole circuit; the cable feeds the last few feet after it
- Integrated Amplifiers — the high-current load most power cables are built to feed
- Stereo Amplifiers — another high-current destination for the heavier gauges in this range
- Digital-to-Analog Converters — a low-current source component that still benefits from clean, quiet AC
Frequently Asked Questions
What is DeathGrip?
Pangea's name for the locking IEC connector on AC-14XL MKII. It grips the component's inlet more securely than a standard IEC plug, so the connection resists loosening from cable weight or routing over time.
Why does shielding matter on an AC cable?
Pangea builds its power cables to keep radio-frequency and electromagnetic noise from riding in on the AC line and reaching sensitive circuits. A ground wire without that shielding can act like an antenna, pulling in exactly the noise a power cable is supposed to keep out.
Do power cables wear out?
Every metal conductor oxidizes over time; it is unavoidable chemistry, not a defect. What varies is the rate. Denser, better-shielded conductors with quality plating oxidize far more slowly, so a well-made cable performs the same way for years instead of drifting.
Will this affect my system's ground safety?
No change to your safety ground. Every cable in this line keeps the full three-conductor path, hot, neutral and ground, exactly as building code requires. What differs from a stock cord is conductor quality and shielding, not the wiring topology.
Is there a step up?
Cardas Clear Reflection is the upgrade path we recommend from AC-14XL MKII. It moves to three full 11.5 AWG Cardas litz conductors and the company's own premium E-5 connectors.
