Premier Optical Uses a High-End Single-Fiber Core

A fiber optic cable carries sound as pulses of light, not electricity, so it can't pick up the electrical or radio-frequency noise a copper cable can. What still matters is fiber quality and how cleanly the ends are polished.

Pangea Audio's Premier Optical is designed by Jay Victor around a single multi-mode plastic optical fiber, the same basic fiber type most optical cables on the market use, but Pangea specifies a higher-grade fiber and a polished, not hot-plate, termination.

A High-End Single Multi-Mode Fiber

Pangea's designer Jay Victor specifies a high-end Japanese fiber with an attenuation spec of less than .16 dB per meter, which he says is much lower than normal fibers, some of which run as high as .8 dB per meter, and of course, much more expensive.

Polished Termination, Not Hot-Plate

Victor says most optical cables are hot-plate terminated, simply pressed against a hot steel plate to melt and flatten the fiber end. Premier Optical instead uses a polished termination, mechanically polished with a very fine grit abrasive material to leave a fine, optically transparent end.

Why does fiber quality matter in an optical cable?

AudioQuest explains it this way: dispersed light does get through a Toslink cable, but only after taking a longer path, arriving late, like a pool ball bouncing off the rails. That delayed light prevents the receiving device from decoding the signal properly. Less dispersion in the fiber means less distortion in the final analog sound.

Is this a glass or plastic fiber?
