Premier SE Puts Cardas Copper in a Coaxial Digital Cable
Pangea Audio's Premier SE is the company's step-up coaxial digital cable. Its 18-gauge signal conductor is Cardas Grade One Copper plated with 6% silver, wrapped in four shield layers and foamed polyethylene. Pangea fits its Prime 550 RCA plugs and rates the cable to 32-bit, 384 kilohertz.
18-Gauge Cardas Grade One Copper With 6% Silver
Pangea winds the 18-gauge signal conductor from Cardas Grade One Copper, the metal George Cardas draws for his own cables, and plates it with 6% pure silver. Designer Jay Victor says he has found silver plating crucial to digital audio cable performance. Foamed polyethylene insulates it.
Quad-Layered Shielding Under a Nylon Braid
Pangea wraps the conductor in what it calls quad-layered shielding: a double-sided aluminum and mylar foil, a 1.25% silver-plated braided shield and a carbon-impregnated polyethylene layer. Jay Victor says any noise that enters a digital cable distorts sound. A TPR jacket and woven nylon braid finish Premier SE.
The Prime 550 RCA Plugs, Explained
Premier SE ends in a Pangea Prime 550 RCA plug at each end. RCA is the single-pin plug on the coaxial digital output of most CD players, streamers and DACs. Pangea lists gold-plated ground contacts and a gold-plated center pin, a polyoxymethylene insulator, a non-magnetic metal cover with a baked-on chromium finish, and a hand-soldered joint.
Who Is This Digital Cable Best For?
- You want Cardas copper at a Pangea price — the signal conductor is Cardas Grade One Copper, the same metal Cardas uses, so the core of the cable is proven
- Your CD player or streamer has a coaxial output — the Prime 550 RCA plugs fit the orange coax socket on most sources and DACs, so no adapter is needed
- Your rack is crowded with power supplies — four shield layers wrap the conductor, so noise has several barriers to cross
- You play high-resolution files — Pangea rates the cable to 32-bit, 384 kilohertz, so it covers anything a coaxial link carries
- Your gear has BNC or AES/EBU sockets — an RCA plug will not fit them. Call us and we will match the plug
How Does It Connect to Your System?
Plug one end into the coaxial digital output of your CD player, transport or streamer and the other into the coaxial digital input of your DAC or receiver. Then choose that input on the DAC and let it lock to the signal.
Then listen. Other and longer lengths available. Call for prices.
Pairs Well With
A digital cable is one link in a digital chain. It usually joins these categories.
- Digital-to-Analog Converters — the receiving end of the link
- CD Players and Transports — the classic coaxial source
- Music Streamers — a streamer with a digital output
- Power Cables — clean power at both ends
Frequently Asked Questions
Why plate copper with silver?
Pangea's designer Jay Victor says silver plating is crucial to digital audio cable performance and that he uses it in all his digital designs. On this cable the plating is 6% pure silver over Cardas Grade One Copper.
What does quad-layered shielding mean?
Pangea lists three shield types, one doubled: a double-sided aluminum and mylar foil, a 1.25% silver-plated braid and a carbon-impregnated polyethylene layer. Jay Victor says the combination beats any two- or three-layer shield he tried.
What is Cardas Grade One Copper?
The copper George Cardas has drawn for his own cables. Pangea says it is mined in Arizona and drawn slowly in New England inside an argon chamber to keep impurities out, then plated with 6% silver at a second factory.
Is there a step up?
Cardas Clear Digital is the next rung we recommend. It moves to Cardas's own Matched Propagation Litz conductors in a 75-ohm coaxial geometry, hand terminated in Bandon, Oregon.
