The Premier XL Phono Cable — Air-Tube Dielectric and Three Shields

A phono cable is the hardest job in a system's wiring. It carries the lowest-level signal you own past every mains lead in the rack, and whatever it picks up gets amplified along with the music.

Design and Materials

Multi-Gauge Conductors

The conductors are Cardas Grade One Copper. What Victor does with them is the part he will not fully explain: rather than a single conductor gauge, the cable uses more than one, and his own description is that one carries the higher frequencies and another the lower — while adding that this is an oversimplification.

Whether the mechanism is as described or something subtler, the construction is verifiable even where the reasoning is proprietary. Multi-gauge rather than single-gauge conductors is a design decision you can see in the cable.

Air-Tube Insulation

Both the signal and return conductors are insulated with PE air tubes. Air is the best practical dielectric there is, and suspending a conductor in it rather than encasing it in solid plastic is what the construction is for.

It is also why air tubes are normally found much further up the price list than this. The cable has to be processed slowly during manufacture to stop the tube collapsing, and that slower line speed is a real manufacturing cost rather than a marketing one.

Shielding and Termination

Three shield layers rather than the usual one or two: a silver-plated copper braid, an aluminum and mylar foil, and a carbon-filled PE layer. The middle layer is the one doing the unglamorous work, providing a path to drain radio-frequency and electromagnetic noise away rather than into the signal.

It terminates in Prime 750 RCA connectors and includes a ground wire run specifically to combat turntable hum. Connect that ground before you judge the cable — a floating ground produces more noise than any shielding will cure.
