Premier XL Twin Lead Was Pangea's First Split USB Cable
Pangea Audio's Premier XL Twin Lead is the original version of the company's top USB cable. Designer Jay Victor split the signal and the power into two cables that meet only at the USB-B plug. The signal conductors are 23-gauge Cardas Grade One Copper with 6% silver plating. Pangea has since replaced it with the XL MKII.
Two USB-A Plugs, One USB-B Plug
The Twin Lead has two legs at the computer end. One USB-A plug carries the signal, the other carries the 5-volt power, and the two legs join at a single USB-B plug on the DAC. Jay Victor says removing the power leg from the signal jacket makes the cable ultra-quiet.
Cardas Copper, Foamed Polyethylene and Quad Shielding
The signal conductors are Cardas Grade One Copper, precision wound at 23 gauge and plated with 6% pure silver. They sit in nitrogen-injected foamed polyethylene. Pangea lists quad shielding and a tough woven nylon braid over the jacket. The build carried over to the MKII that replaced it.
The USB Plugs, Explained
Premier XL Twin Lead ends in two flat USB-A plugs for the computer end and one square USB-B plug for the DAC end. Both USB-A plugs must go into the computer or a powered hub, one for signal and one for power. USB-B is the square, shouldered plug on most desktop DACs.
Who Is This USB Cable Best For?
- You want the split-leg design at a closing price — this is the original XL, now discontinued and priced to clear, so the two-cable idea costs less than the MKII
- Your computer has two free USB ports — the cable needs one USB-A port for signal and one for power, so a laptop with a single port will need a hub
- You want Cardas copper with a heavy silver coat — 6% silver over Cardas Grade One Copper is the same conductor Pangea uses in the MKII, so the metal did not change
- You do not mind bulk — two legs and a braided jacket take more room behind a desk than a single cable, so leave space
- You have one USB port or need USB-C — the Twin Lead needs two USB-A ports and its plugs are USB 2.0 only. If that does not fit your computer, choose the Pangea Premier XL MKII or call us
How Does It Connect to Your System?
Plug both USB-A ends of the Twin Lead into your computer or a powered hub and the USB-B end into your DAC. Then choose the DAC as the output device in your player or system sound settings.
Then listen. Lengths are limited to what remains in stock. Call for availability.
Pairs Well With
A USB cable is one link in a digital chain. It usually joins these categories.
- Digital-to-Analog Converters — the usual receiving end
- Music Streamers — streamer or server to DAC
- Headphone Amplifiers — a DAC and amp on the desk
- Power Cables — clean power at both ends
Frequently Asked Questions
Why two USB-A plugs?
The original XL puts the 5-volt power in its own leg with its own plug, so the power conductor never shares a jacket with the signal. Pangea's MKII later merged the plugs while keeping two legs.
Is this cable still made?
Pangea replaced it with the Premier XL MKII. We are selling the remaining Twin Lead stock, so not every length is available.
Does a USB cable change the sound? It is only data.
The data arrives either way. What differs is the noise that rides in with it. Pangea's Jay Victor says radio and electromagnetic interference can distort the electrical signal a USB cable carries, and that some of it is audible.
Is there a step up?
Cardas Clear USB is the next rung we recommend. It moves to Cardas's Kevlar-core Litz conductors in PTFE, with a shielded signal pair inside a second shield.
