Most racks arrive as a fixed thing. You choose a height, you live with it, and when the system grows you start again. The Vulcan was drawn the other way round. Steel tubes thread onto rods by hand, shelves clamp between them, and another level goes on whenever you want one — up to six.

It has been made this way long enough to be recognized for it. Positive Feedback gave the Vulcan line a Writers’ Choice Award in 2017, and the rack has changed very little since, because the design was right the first time.

Will It Take Your Whole System?

Put a Heavy Amp on Any Shelf

Every shelf carries 75 pounds, and that figure is the same whether it is the bottom level or the one under the top. There is no weak shelf to plan around, so the heaviest box in your system goes wherever the cable runs are shortest rather than wherever the rack allows.

Swap the Posts, Change the Clearance

The rack ships with 7.25 inches of clear height between the upper shelves and 8.75 inches above the bottom one. That gap is set by the posts, and posts come out. Fit the 10-inch set and a tall tube amplifier has room; fit the 5.25-inch set and a slim streamer stops wasting the space above it.

Each shelf is 23.75 inches wide and 18 inches deep, but measure your widest component against the 19.4 inches clear between the side supports. That is the figure that decides, not the shelf.

Add a Level Whenever the System Grows

This is the reason to buy a Vulcan rather than something cheaper. An add-on shelf arrives as one part with its four posts already in the box, so a three-shelf rack becomes a four without a second order. Turn the rack upside down, add the level from the bottom, set it back on its feet.

Six shelves is the ceiling, and the same threads accept storage drawers, rolling casters and an LP shelf that holds a hundred records. See the add-on shelves when the system outgrows what you have, and add one level at a time.

Your Turntable Belongs on the Top Shelf

Nothing sits above it there, so the dust cover opens through its full arc and the deck ends up as far as it can from everything else that is running. A thicker 21mm top platform is available if yours is unusually heavy.

Why It Doesn’t Wobble

A floor carries vibration and speakers put more into the room, so a rack either passes it along or holds still against it. Holding still is a question of how stiff the frame is once together, and the Vulcan is stiffer than flat-pack racks usually manage.

What Makes It Stiff Enough to Stay Still

Each steel support tube has a threaded rod running down the middle of it. Tightening the rod pulls the tubes and the shelf between them into one clamped column rather than a stack of parts resting on each other. That is why it does not develop a wobble after a month.

Spikes That Bite, Discs That Protect

Cone-point feet with adjustable steel spikes couple the rack through carpet to the floor underneath and level it on boards that are never quite flat. Four Mini Sonic Saucers come in the box so the spikes can be used on wood or tile without marking either.

Nothing Here Traps the Heat

The frame is open on all four sides, which is something no closed cabinet can offer. Heat leaves a warm component through its top and its flanks, and on a Vulcan neither route is blocked by a panel or a door.

The post system helps here too. A warm-running amplifier can be given a 10-inch gap while a thin streamer sits in a shorter one, rather than every component getting the same clearance whether it needs it or not.

No Tools. About Fifteen Minutes.

Nothing in the box needs a screwdriver, a wrench or a hex key. The threaded rods hide inside the support tubes, and you turn the tubes by hand until each shelf is clamped. Most people have the whole rack standing in about a quarter of an hour.

Set the spikes before any gear goes on. Leveling is much easier with empty shelves, and getting it right at the start saves lifting a loaded rack to reach a foot later on.

Will my tall amplifier fit between the shelves?
