Why the Top Platform Is Thicker Than the Rest

The turntable shelf is 19 millimeters of MDF where the two below it are 0.625 inches. A heavier platform resists being set moving by whatever reaches it, and a deck is the one component on any rack that cannot tolerate being moved while it works.

The surface is 23.75 inches wide and 18 deep, which takes a full-size plinth and leaves the dust cover room to hinge. Nothing sits above it, so the cover opens through its whole arc.

A Middle Shelf for Whatever Drives the Deck

There are 7.25 inches of clear height between the middle shelf and the platform above it, which suits a phono stage, a small integrated amplifier or a streamer. Check yours against the 19.4 inches clear between the side supports rather than the shelf width.

A Hundred Records on the Bottom

The lowest shelf is built for vinyl and sits 13.1 inches below the middle one, so a twelve-inch sleeve stands upright with room to get your fingers in above it. It takes more than a hundred records, spines out.

It Works as a Component Rack Too

Why a Full Bottom Shelf Is a Good Thing

A hundred records weigh about fifty pounds and all of it sits near the floor. Weight that low drops the center of gravity and makes the whole stand harder for anything in the room to disturb, which is the opposite of how most furniture behaves as you fill it.

The Braces Tighten as the Records Go In

Steel X-braces frame the bottom shelf. A rectangle of posts can lean; a braced one cannot, because the shape would have to change length first. Pangea builds these to come under tension as the load goes on, so a full stand is a stiffer stand.

You Will Not Need the Toolbox

No screwdriver and no wrench are required. Bolts hide inside the steel posts, and the posts twist together by hand to clamp each shelf as they tighten. Fifteen minutes is the usual figure, and it does not loosen off over the year that follows.

Level it on the spikes while the shelves are still empty. Fifty pounds of vinyl and a turntable make a stand very hard to tilt, and reaching a foot underneath a loaded one is a job you will only want to do once.

Records Where You Can Actually Reach Them

Storing records upright with the spines showing is the difference between a collection you browse and a stack you excavate. Flat piles hide everything under the top sleeve, and the record you want is always near the bottom of one.
