Polk's Legend-Series Drivers in a 13-Inch Cabinet

The Reserve R100 is the smaller of Polk Audio's two Reserve bookshelf speakers. It uses the same 1-inch Pinnacle ring radiator tweeter and Turbine Cone woofer design as Polk's flagship Legend series, in a cabinet under 13 inches tall. The speakers are sold as a pair in black, white or brown.

Polk launched the Reserve series in 2021 as the step below Legend. Every Reserve model shares the same tweeter and cone design. A pair of R100s can start a stereo system now and become the surround channels of a Reserve home theater later, with the same voice front to back.

The Drivers

The tweeter has a pointed center plug and a waveguide that Polk says widens the sweet spot and controls dispersion. The 5.25-inch woofer uses a molded foam-core cone with a turbine pattern, for stiffness without added weight. The two drivers cross over at 2,700 Hz.

The Numbers, and What They Ask of You

Polk quotes an overall response of 44 Hz to 50 kHz, with the minus 3 dB limits at 58 Hz and 39 kHz. Sensitivity is 86 dB at 2.83 volts. The minimum impedance is 3.6 ohms, and the recommended amplifier power is 30 to 150 watts per channel.

That impedance dip is why the R100 wants an amplifier or receiver that is comfortable with 4-ohm speakers. Polk rates it for 8, 6 and 4 ohm outputs. A 50-watt integrated or a mid-range receiver is a good match, and there is headroom up to 150 watts.

Size, Port and Finish

Each cabinet measures 6.5 inches wide, 12.8 tall and 10.2 deep including the feet, and weighs 12.2 pounds. The rear X-Port uses closed-pipe absorbers tuned to the cabinet to cancel port resonance. The grilles are magnetic, and the Reserve series carries Polk's five-year warranty.

How Do They Connect to Your System?

Speaker cable runs from your amplifier or receiver to the binding posts on each speaker, red to red and black to black. These are passive speakers, so there is nothing to plug into the wall. Polk recommends 30 to 150 watts per channel.

Place them on stands or a shelf with the tweeter near ear height. StereoNET found the bass fills out when the speakers sit closer to the wall behind them, and suggested a small 8-inch subwoofer for listeners who want more weight.
