One Box That Ends the Rack

The Primare I35 Prisma is an integrated amplifier, a DAC, and a network player in one Swedish-built chassis. It delivers 150 watts per channel into 8 ohms, and 300 watts into 4 ohms, from Primare's own UFPD 2 Class D modules.

Analog sources get two balanced XLR pairs and three RCA pairs. That is five analog inputs before you reach the digital side, plus a line output and a preamp output for a subwoofer or a bigger power amplifier later.

Stream Without Adding Another Box

The Prisma module brings AirPlay, Chromecast built-in, Spotify Connect, Bluetooth, and internet radio. Connect over Wi-Fi or either of two Ethernet ports. Chromecast opens the door to hundreds of services, and the system runs multi-room from Primare's app.

What UFPD 2 Actually Changes

UFPD stands for Ultra Fast Power Device. The second generation reworks the Class D output stage Primare has used for years. The company's stated aim was linear amplification across the whole audible band, not just part of it.

The published numbers are quiet ones. Distortion plus noise stays under 0.01% from 20Hz to 20kHz at 10 watts into 8 ohms. Signal-to-noise beats 100 dB. Frequency response holds 20Hz to 20kHz within 0.2 dB.

The Chip Doing the Converting

The DM36 module runs an ESS ES9068A converter. It handles PCM to 384kHz and 32 bits, plus DSD256 and MQA, with upsampling options. Because the module is separate, the digital section can be upgraded without replacing the amplifier.

Modularity is the point of the 35 series. The same chassis exists as a bare I35, an I35 DAC, and this fully loaded Prisma version, so the platform grows rather than gets replaced.

Neil Gader reviewed the I35 Prisma for The Absolute Sound on June 27, 2019. He called it "a top-notch, nicely balanced performance" and wrote that "Never have integrated amps been asked to do so much musically and functionally."

Alan Sircom reviewed it for hi-fi+ on June 22, 2021. "Adding both DAC and Prisma makes the I35 one of the most comprehensively specified integrated amplifiers out there at the moment", and he found "Set-up of Prisma is a breeze".

Gader listed "A couple of minor quibbles": the OLED characters are legible up close but tiny from across the room, and "The front-panel menu interface on the I35 needs updating". Sircom qualified the easy setup as "at least for those net-savvy enough to have built their own home network". He also noted one gap: "But no AES/EBU link."

How Does It Connect to Your System?

Speakers go to the binding posts, balanced sources to the XLR pairs, and everything else to the three RCA pairs. A television or disc player connects over Toslink or coaxial, and a computer over USB-B. Ethernet or Wi-Fi puts it on the network.

From there the Prisma app takes over: pick a source, pick a room, pick a service. The C25 remote, IR ports, a 12V trigger, and RS232 are there for custom installation.
