One Millimeter of Cork and Rubber, for a Dense or Heavy Platter
The Pro-Ject Cork & Rubber-it is sold each, one mat per turntable. This is the 1 millimeter version. Pro-Ject makes it in two thicknesses and is specific about which goes where: the thin one belongs on a dense or heavy platter.
A heavy platter is already doing most of the damping. Piling a thick mat on top of it adds little and lifts the record further from the surface that is doing the work. One millimeter couples the record without getting in the way.
A Blend, Not a Compromise
Fit, Load and Materials
The mat is a blended mix of cork and rubber rather than a layer of each. Rubber brings the acoustic control, cork brings the anti-static behavior, and the blend is Pro-Ject's answer to the fact that neither material does both. It adds under 0.5 pounds to the platter.
At 1 millimeter it is thin enough that it barely changes how high the record sits, which matters if your tonearm has no height adjustment. It drops straight onto the platter in place of the existing mat.
Pro-Ject's own guidance decides which version you want, and it is worth following: the thin mat on dense or heavy platters, and the 3 millimeter version on thin metal platters, which need more damping than the platter itself provides.
Who Is the 1 mm Cork & Rubber-it Best For?
- Your platter is dense or heavy — this is the thickness Pro-Ject specifies for that case
- Your tonearm has no height adjustment — 1 millimeter barely moves the record, so tracking angle stays near where it was
- Your records attract dust — the cork in the blend keeps the static charge down where a felt mat builds it
- You want damping without deadening — rubber for control, cork to stop it going too far
- Your platter is thin metal — that case wants more damping than a millimeter provides, and Pro-Ject makes the 3 millimeter version for it
How Do You Fit It?
Take the old mat off the platter. Lay the Cork & Rubber-it on, line the hole up with the spindle and smooth it flat. At a millimeter the change in record height is small, but if you are coming off a thick felt mat it is still worth re-checking arm height.
Pairs Well With
What most turntable mat owners shop next.
- Record clamps and weights — a mat only damps what is pressed against it
- Record brushes — a dry sweep before every side
- Stylus force gauges — a new mat changes arm height, so it is worth re-checking
- Cartridge alignment tools — the setup job that decides how a record tracks
Frequently Asked Questions
How many do I need?
One. The mat is sold each and a turntable takes a single mat.
Should I have the 1 mm or the 3 mm?
Pro-Ject's rule: the 1 millimeter mat on dense or heavy platters, the 3 millimeter on thin metal platters. The thin platter needs more damping; the heavy one is already doing it.
Why cork and rubber together?
Rubber gives the acoustic control and cork keeps static down. A pure rubber mat overdamps and traps charge on the record; pure felt holds static and damps a metal platter poorly.
Will it change my tonearm setup?
Only slightly at this thickness. If you are replacing a thicker felt mat the record will sit lower, so re-check vertical tracking angle if your arm adjusts for height.
