A Diamond-Cut Aluminum Sub-Platter for the Debut and Debut PRO
This is Pro-Ject's Debut Alu sub-platter, sold each. It replaces the sub-platter fitted as standard to the Debut series, including the Debut PRO, with one machined from diamond-cut aluminum to closer tolerances and greater mass.
The sub-platter is the part the belt actually drives, and the part that turns in the bearing. Everything the platter does well happens downstream of it. That is why Pro-Ject treats it as a component to be machined properly, rather than as a spindle with a pulley stuck on the end.
Diamond-Cut Aluminum, Machined Closer
Fit and Materials
The material is diamond-cut aluminum, held to tighter tolerances than the standard Debut part. Closer tolerances mean less play in the bearing and a truer pulley face, and the extra mass gives the drive something more substantial to work against than the part it replaces.
It fits the Debut series across the range. Pro-Ject cuts sub-platters per family rather than sharing one across the catalog, so the model name on the box is the fitment — a sub-platter from another Pro-Ject line will not seat correctly in a Debut's bearing.
Who Is This Sub-Platter Best For?
- You own any Debut-series turntable — Pro-Ject makes this for the whole line, Debut PRO included
- You have already changed the mat or the platter — the sub-platter is the part underneath both
- You want an upgrade you can do yourself — belt off, platter off, swap, reassemble
- You want mass in the drive system — aluminum machined closer, rather than the standard part
- You own an X1, X2 or The Classic — those take their own sub-platters, listed in turntable parts and add-ons
How Do You Fit It?
Slip the belt off and lift the platter clear. Withdraw the old sub-platter from the bearing well, keeping it upright so the bearing oil stays where it belongs. Lower the new one in, let it settle, refit the belt and the platter, then turn it by hand to check it runs true before switching on.
Pairs Well With
What most owners upgrading a turntable shop next.
- Turntable belts — worth replacing while the platter is off
- Cartridge alignment tools — a change in record height means re-checking geometry
- Stylus force gauges — the other measurement to re-take afterwards
- Turntable mats — the surface the record actually sits on
Frequently Asked Questions
How many do I need?
One. A turntable takes a single sub-platter.
Which turntables does it fit?
All Pro-Ject Debut-series turntables, including the Debut PRO. The X1, X2 and The Classic use different sub-platters cut for those decks.
Do I need to change the belt as well?
Not required, but the platter is already off and a Debut belt is inexpensive. If yours has a few years on it, doing both at once saves taking the deck apart twice.
