The Pro-Ject Sweep it S2 — A Cleaning Arm That Does Not Skate

A record cleaning arm that sits beside your tonearm and sweeps the groove just ahead of the stylus, continuously, while the record plays. It mounts on the plinth and tracks inward as the record turns.

Cleaning arms have existed since the early 1970s, and the reason they have never quite caught on is skating. Left to itself a brush arm rushes toward the middle of the record, out of step with the tonearm — which is worse than useless.

How It Works

Magnets, Not Weight

Pro-Ject built the S2 with audio designer Klaus Mick around his patented magnet technology. A neodymium magnet in the top of the cylinder is paired with an iron-core counterweight, and the attraction between them stabilizes the brush arm.

The distance between magnet and counterweight is set deliberately to give a specific stabilization force. The arm itself is aluminum, which is paramagnetic — weakly magnetic — so it behaves as additional space between the two, which is part of the calculation rather than incidental.

Why That Solves Skating

A stabilised arm keeps pace with the tonearm instead of running ahead of it. The brush stays just in front of the stylus, sweeping the groove the stylus is about to enter, which is the only position where a cleaning arm is doing anything useful.

Setting It Up

Height

The S2 is height adjustable through about 0.4 inches so you can bring it horizontal with the platter, and the position locks with a set screw on the base. Getting that alignment right is what produces the correct tracking force of roughly 6 grams — height and force are the same adjustment here.

Position

It can sit in either of the two left-hand corners of the turntable, which is what lets it suit different plinth shapes. At the optimal position the brush lines up with the spindle, which is to say the center of the platter.

Pro-Ject is specific about the tolerance: deviations of 0.6 to 0.8 inches relative to the spindle are compensated by the design. Larger deviations than that cause drastic skating and should be avoided, which makes plinth shape a real compatibility question.

How Do You Set It Up?

Choose the corner, then position the base so the brush aligns with the spindle as closely as the plinth allows — within 0.8 inches. Set the height so the arm sits horizontal with the platter and lock the set screw. Getting that horizontal right is what gives you the roughly 6 gram tracking force the design expects.
