High-Mass Isolation, Your Choice of Cartridge
The Xtension 9 Evolution brings Pro-Ject's high-mass turntable design down to a size that fits most standard audio racks, combining a 5.4kg damped aluminum platter, magnetically isolated feet, and a precision 9-inch carbon-fiber tonearm.
This version ships without a phono cartridge, so you choose the moving-magnet or moving-coil design that best fits your system and your ears, rather than living with whatever the factory happened to install.
There's no built-in phono preamp either: a five-pin-to-RCA phono cable connects to an external MM or MC phono stage matched to whichever cartridge you eventually settle on and mount yourself.
A Heavy Chassis on Magnetically Isolated Feet
35+ Pounds of CNC-Machined Mass
The heavy CNC-machined MDF chassis gives the platter, motor, and tonearm a firm, stable base weighing more than 35 pounds, with the added mass working specifically to control vibration during playback.
Three powerful magnetic feet isolate that chassis from whatever surface it sits on, letting the whole turntable appear to float above its support while reducing vibration from speakers, footsteps, and the room itself.
A 9-Inch Carbon-Fiber Tonearm on ABEC 7 Bearings
The one-piece carbon-fiber arm tube stays light and stiff while controlling unwanted resonance, riding on inverted precision bearings built to ABEC 7 standards for genuinely low-friction, accurate tracking every time.
Four counterweights cover cartridges from 4 to 14 grams, and you can adjust vertical tracking angle, azimuth, tracking force, and anti-skating once your chosen cartridge is mounted and ready to align.
What Reviewers Are Saying
Hi-Fi News called the Xtension 9 platform's downsizing from the larger Xtension design, paired with "an updated and improved tonearm," a combination that "results in a turntable combination with few vices."
Who Is the Xtension 9 Evolution Best For?
- You already own a cartridge, or want to choose your own — nothing is pre-installed, so the decision and the setup are entirely yours
- You want serious, visible engineering — a carbon-fiber tonearm on ABEC 7 bearings and a magnetically isolated chassis, not just a name on the box
- You want a size that fits a standard rack — at 18.3 inches wide, it's more manageable than Pro-Ject's larger Xtension models
- You have, or plan to get, a capable phono preamp — this deck has none built in, matched instead to whatever cartridge you choose
- You want the largest platter and highest mass in the range — the Xtension 12 steps up both, for listeners chasing the absolute flagship experience
How Does It Connect to Your System?
Connect the included five-pin-to-RCA phono cable to an external MM or MC phono preamplifier, or to an amplifier with a compatible built-in phono input, matched to whichever cartridge you mount.
Cartridge choice determines what you need downstream: a moving-magnet design calls for a standard MM phono input, while a low-output moving-coil cartridge needs a phono stage with genuine MC support.
Pairs Well With
Where the Xtension 9 Evolution goes from here:
- Phono cartridges — this listing ships without one, so the tonearm is yours to fit with whichever suits your ears and your phono stage
- Phono preamplifiers — make sure yours matches whatever cartridge output you end up choosing
- Integrated amplifiers — pair with an amp that has a built-in phono stage, or add a separate preamp
- Audio racks — a strong, level shelf matters for a turntable at this weight and level
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Xtension 9 Evolution include a cartridge?
It doesn't. A compatible moving-magnet or moving-coil cartridge needs to be purchased and installed separately.
What cartridge weights will the tonearm accept?
The included counterweights support cartridges weighing between 4 and 14 grams.
Does it have a built-in phono preamp?
It doesn't. You'll need an external phono preamp, or an amplifier with a phono input matched to your cartridge.
Can it play 78rpm records?
It can't. Electronic speed selection covers 33⅓ and 45rpm only on the current Xtension 9 Evolution.
Is a dustcover included?
Yes. A hinged dustcover protects the platter and tonearm when the turntable isn't in use.
Will it fit on a standard audio rack?
Its 18.3-inch width fits many standard racks, provided the shelf can safely support its 35.3-pound weight.
