A Hand-Tuned 24-Volt Synchronous Motor, With a Rigid Mount
This is Rega's 24-volt motor upgrade kit, sold each. It is a low-noise, low-vibration synchronous AC motor developed as an upgrade for Rega's 24-volt turntables, supplied with an individually hand-tuned circuit board and a rigid mount.
A turntable motor has one job and one problem. The job is turning the platter at a constant rate; the problem is that everything it does other than turning — every vibration it makes — reaches the record through the same plinth the arm is bolted to.
Hand-Tuned Boards and a Rigid Mount
Fit and Materials
Each motor comes with a PCB that Rega hand-tunes individually to minimize vibration. Motors vary unit to unit, so a board matched to its own motor gets closer than one specification applied across a production run.
The mount is rigid rather than suspended. Earlier Planar models hung the motor on compliant mounts to keep vibration out of the plinth; bolting it down instead improves start-up speed, and Rega's position is that a quieter motor is the better way to solve the vibration problem.
It fits Rega's 24-volt turntables and is compatible with the Rega TT-PSU. Check what your deck runs before ordering — this is a 24-volt motor and Rega's older turntables are not all 24-volt.
Who Is This Motor Kit Best For?
- You own a 24-volt Rega turntable — the decks this kit is developed for
- Your motor has grown noisy — motors get louder with age, gradually enough to go unnoticed
- You run a TT-PSU — the kit is compatible with it, so the two work together
- You want speed to settle faster — the rigid mount improves start-up over the earlier suspended arrangement
- Your Rega is not a 24-volt model — this motor will not suit it; check the specification for your deck in turntable parts and add-ons
How Do You Fit It?
This is a deeper job than a belt or a platter — the motor is fixed into the plinth and wired to the switch. Follow Rega's instructions for your model, or have a dealer fit it. Once it is in, check the platter runs true and confirm speed with a strobe before playing anything.
Pairs Well With
What most owners upgrading a turntable shop next.
- Turntable belts — worth replacing while the platter is off
- Cartridge alignment tools — a change in record height means re-checking geometry
- Stylus force gauges — the other measurement to re-take afterwards
- Turntable mats — the surface the record actually sits on
Frequently Asked Questions
How many do I need?
One. A Rega turntable uses a single motor.
Which turntables does it fit?
Rega's 24-volt turntables, and it is compatible with the Rega TT-PSU. Confirm your deck is a 24-volt model before ordering.
Is this a job I can do myself?
It is more involved than changing a belt, since the motor is mounted in the plinth and wired in. Follow Rega's instructions for your model, or have a dealer do it.
