A 2 Millimeter Circular Spacer, for a Rega Arm on Somebody Else's Turntable
This is Rega's 2 millimeter circular arm spacer, sold each. It raises a Rega tonearm at the base to correct arm height, and it is made for the RB250, RB300 and RB600. Rega's own note is worth repeating: on a Rega turntable, a spacer should not be necessary.
Arm height sets vertical tracking angle — the angle at which the stylus meets the groove. Records were cut at a nominal angle, and a stylus arriving at a different one is tracing the modulation from a slightly wrong perspective for the whole side.
Why a Rega Arm Might Sit Too Low
Fit and Materials
Rega designs its arms and its turntables together, so the arm sits at the right height on a Rega deck without help. Fit that arm to a turntable from another maker, with a different plinth thickness and platter height, and the geometry no longer lines up.
The circular spacer is available in 2 millimeters for the RB250, RB300 and RB600, and it goes between the arm base and the mounting board. Rega also makes an arm sleeve nut for the case where the arm base does not protrude below the board at all.
Two millimeters is a deliberate increment rather than a fine adjustment. If your arm needs something between, that is what an arm with continuously variable height is for — a spacer moves the whole arm in one step.
Who Is This Spacer Best For?
- You have fitted a Rega arm to another maker's turntable — the case the spacer exists for
- Your arm tube runs downhill toward the record — the sign that the base is sitting too low
- You own an RB250, RB300 or RB600 — the three arms this circular spacer is cut for
- Your cartridge is deeper than a Rega's — a deep body needs clearance at the rear, which lifting the arm provides
- Your Rega arm is on a Rega turntable — Rega says a spacer should not be needed there, so check the arm is seated correctly before adding height; the three-point pattern for newer arms is in turntable parts and add-ons
How Do You Fit It?
Remove the cartridge or fit the stylus guard first — this job puts your hands near the stylus. Loosen the arm base and lift the arm clear of the mounting board. Set the spacer between the two, refit and tighten. Re-check overhang, offset and tracking force before playing anything: moving the arm vertically changes all three.
Pairs Well With
What most owners fitting a tonearm part shop next.
- Cartridge alignment tools — anything that moves the cartridge means re-checking geometry
- Stylus force gauges — and re-setting tracking force afterwards
- Phono cartridges — the component all of this is in service of
- Test records — for hearing whether the change landed
Frequently Asked Questions
How many do I need?
One per arm, in most cases. Stacking spacers is possible but each one raises the arm by another 2 millimeters, so work out the height you need before ordering more than one.
Which tonearms does it fit?
Circular spacers in 2 millimeters are made for the RB250, RB300 and RB600. Rega notes that on a Rega turntable, spacers should not be necessary.
What if my arm base does not protrude below the board?
Rega makes an arm sleeve nut for exactly that situation, which is a different part from this spacer.
