Rega's Reference Moving Coil Phono Stage

The Rega Aura MC is a dedicated moving coil phono stage, and Rega's flagship reference design. It's built exclusively for moving coil cartridges, with no moving magnet mode to compromise the circuit.

Rega's more affordable AOS MC borrows heavily from the Aura's circuit approach. The Aura is the larger, full-width original. Its chassis measures 350 by 435 by 88mm. At 13kg, its weight reflects a big power supply inside.

Rega calls its approach maximum minimalism. That means stripping out extra functions and tunable filters that could get in the way of the signal. A three-stage, all-symmetrical circuit handles amplification. The input stage uses parallel Linear Systems FETs, chosen for very low noise. That removes any coupling parts between the cartridge and the first gain stage.

Relay-Switched Precision for Reference Cartridges

Gain switches between two relay-controlled settings, at 69.5dB and 63.5dB. Loading resistance offers five values: 50, 100, 150, 300 and 400 ohms, which covers the range most moving coils ask for.

Capacitive loading adds five more options, from 1,000 to 5,700pF. Rega switches all of it through relays rather than mechanical contacts, for a cleaner path that stays the same over years of use. RIAA accuracy is rated within ±0.2dB from 100Hz to 50kHz. Frequency response spans 13.5Hz to 100kHz, and distortion stays at just 0.03%.

A symmetrical, discrete tracking power supply runs 60% higher in voltage than most designs. Each stage inside gets its own local, LED-referenced power as a result. Relay-switched mute and mono controls sit on the front panel.

Ed Selley reviewed the Aura alongside Rega's Naia turntable for AVForums in December 2023. He described its noise floor as being "in a different class." Music, he found, was "delivered from a backdrop of absolute silence and the result is startlingly vivid."
