A Budget Phono Stage That Also Digitizes Your Records
The Rega Fono Mini A2D MK2 is a moving magnet phono preamplifier with a built-in USB output. Rega bases its circuit on the design of its own award-winning Fono MM. It scales that design down to a more affordable price.
Alongside its standard RCA output, a USB port lets you record straight from your turntable into a computer. That makes it easy to convert vinyl into digital files. Use them for a phone, a playlist, or a personal archive.
This is the current MK2 version. Rega has continued to refine it for usability since the original Fono Mini A2D. It's an MM-only design. Rega's separate Fono MC and Fono MM MK5 cover other spots in the lineup.
Built Around USB Vinyl Transfer
Input sensitivity is rated at 5mV for a 500mV output. Input loading is fixed at 47 kOhms in parallel with 100pF. Maximum input level reaches 70mV at 1kHz, and output impedance sits at 100 ohms.
Signal-to-noise ratio measures 78dBA, referenced to 5mV. The USB output records at 16-bit resolution. Sample rate runs at 44.1kHz, with support up to 48kHz.
It runs from an external 24V AC power supply drawing up to 85mA. The chassis measures a compact 102 by 125 by 30mm, sized by width, depth, and height. That's small enough to sit almost anywhere near a turntable.
What Reviewers Are Saying
Marc Henshall reviewed the Fono Mini A2D MK2 for Sound Matters in July 2023. He called its sound "very neutral, bringing out the best of your records as the artist/engineer intended without adding too much in the way of ‘color’ to the sound."
He also praised its value. As he put it, "for a phono pre below $200...the dynamics and confident sound of the Fono Mini A2D is hard to beat." He also noted "crystal clear" instrument separation.
Who Is This Preamp Best For?
- Anyone digitizing their record collection. Its built-in USB output records straight from your turntable to a computer.
- Shoppers on a tight budget. It brings Rega's Fono MM design philosophy down to an entry-level price.
- Owners of a moving magnet cartridge. Its fixed loading is tuned for typical MM performance.
- Listeners who want proven, independently reviewed sound quality. A named reviewer praised its neutral, dynamic presentation at this price point.
- Not the right fit for anyone who owns a moving coil cartridge. This model is MM-only; Rega's separate Fono MC covers moving coil cartridges instead.
How Does It Connect to Your System?
Run your turntable's phono cable into the Fono Mini A2D MK2's RCA input. Then connect its RCA output to a line-level input on your amplifier or receiver.
To digitize a record, connect the USB port to a computer instead, or in addition. Recording software on your computer then captures the signal while you play the record.
