A Simple, Focused Phono Stage from Rega
The Rega Fono MM MK5 is a moving magnet phono preamplifier. It's built to do one job well: take the signal from an MM cartridge and turn it into something your amplifier can use.
Inside is a fully discrete, cascaded amplifier circuit, built without a single fixed setting to fuss over. Rega designed it to just work, without dip switches or dials to configure.
The MK5 brings a redesigned aluminum case, styled to match Rega's Fono MC and its newer electronics. It's a cosmetic update built to sit alongside Rega's current amplifier and turntable lineup.
This is the MM-only version. Rega also sells a separate Fono MC for moving coil cartridges, built around different circuitry and gain. Choosing the right one for your cartridge matters, since the two aren't interchangeable.
Tuned Specifically for Moving Magnet
Gain measures 41.4dB at 1kHz, with input loading fixed at 47 kOhms in parallel with 100pF. That's the standard loading most moving magnet cartridges expect.
RIAA accuracy is rated better than ±0.2dB from 100Hz to 100kHz at a 50 kOhm output load. Frequency response reaches from 15Hz down at -3dB up to 100kHz at -0.2dB.
Output impedance sits at 200 ohms, with a recommended minimum output load of 5 kOhms. It draws 24V AC at up to 80mA from its external power supply. Maximum input level is rated at 60mV at 1kHz, giving it plenty of headroom before overload.
It measures 45 by 180 by 150mm and weighs 650 grams. Black is the only finish currently offered.
What Reviewers Are Saying
Ian White reviewed the Fono MM MK5 for ecoustics.com in December 2023, naming it one of his Editor's Choice phono preamps of the year.
He described its sound as "fleet of foot" and "engaging," adding that it's "full of texture and tone" and brings real "vitality to the sound with the right cartridge."
Who Is This Preamp Best For?
- Anyone with a moving magnet cartridge. Its fixed loading and gain are tuned specifically for MM performance.
- Listeners who want simplicity over switches. There's nothing to configure; just connect it and go.
- Rega turntable owners building a matching system. Its case design lines up with Rega's current electronics.
- Shoppers who want proven, independently reviewed performance. A named reviewer named it an Editor's Choice pick.
- Not the right fit for anyone who owns a moving coil cartridge. This model is MM-only; Rega's separate Fono MC covers moving coil cartridges instead.
How Does It Connect to Your System?
Run your turntable's phono cable into the Fono MM MK5's RCA input, then connect its RCA output to a line-level input on your amplifier or receiver.
There's no gain or loading to set. Plug in the included 24V AC power supply and it's ready to play. Keep its power supply away from other cables where you can, since AC transformers can sometimes introduce hum into a nearby phono connection.
Pairs Well With
Building your system? Here are some great companions for the Rega Fono MM MK5:
- Turntables without a built-in phono stage
- Moving magnet phono cartridges matched to its fixed loading
- Interconnect cables to connect its output to your amp
Frequently Asked Questions
Does this work with a moving coil cartridge?
No. This model is built for moving magnet cartridges only. Rega's separate Fono MC handles moving coil cartridges.
Can I adjust the gain or loading?
No. Gain and loading are fixed at values chosen for typical moving magnet cartridges, so there's nothing to configure.
How is the MK5 different from the previous MK4?
Rega's own materials point to a redesigned aluminum case as the main update, styled to match its current Fono MC and electronics lineup.
What's the warranty?
Rega covers the Fono MM MK5 for three years in the US against manufacturing defects.
