The Rega Neo PSU Mk2 — The Planar 10's Speed Control, on Your Turntable

An external power supply for Rega turntables that replaces the wall-wart the deck shipped with. It gives you electronic speed change, fine speed adjustment, and a motor drive built around a crystal rather than around whatever the mains happens to be doing.

The part worth knowing: Rega states the Neo Mk2 uses "the same DSP (digital signal processing) generator found in the Planar 10 power supply." That is the generator from the top of the range, in a box you can add to a Planar 3.

How It Works

Why the Mains Is the Problem

A synchronous motor turns at a speed set by the frequency driving it. Take that frequency from the mains and platter speed inherits whatever the grid is doing — which is close, but not fixed, and not the same everywhere.

The Neo generates its own instead. Rega describes a high-stability crystal whose signal the DSP generator divides "to the exact frequency required to turn the platter at the selected speed whilst producing a near perfect sinusoidal waveform to drive the 24v motor."

What a Clean Waveform Buys

A motor fed a rough waveform vibrates more, and a turntable motor sits a few inches from a cartridge reading micron-scale movement. Rega's claim for the Neo is reduced motor noise along with improved speed stability and rotational accuracy.

The practical gains are the obvious ones too: 33 and 45 at the touch of a button rather than moving a belt between pulleys, and fine adjustment to trim speed exactly.

Rega lists the Neo Mk2 as compatible with the P3-24, RP3, Planar 3 from 2016 to current, RP6, P5, P7, the RP40 special edition and the RP8 — or any older Rega fitted with Rega's aftermarket 24 V upgrade kit.

That last clause is the one people miss. The Neo drives a 24 V motor, so an older Rega still running its original motor needs the upgrade kit first; the power supply on its own will not do anything for it.
