Rega's Reference Turntable, Ready for the Cartridge You Choose
The Rega PL10 (Planar 10) is Rega's flagship turntable, drawing directly on the no-compromise Naiad reference project. An ultra-light skeletal plinth, diamond-cut ceramic platter, and hand-built RB3000 tonearm form the core of the design. This version ships without a cartridge, so you choose the model that best fits your system.
The included PL10 outboard power supply hand-matches to its own 24-volt motor, with electronic 33⅓/45 rpm switching and fine speed adjustment built in. Twin Reference EBLT belts and a ceramic double-brace system carry the platter and tonearm.
The PL10 is fully manual otherwise, with no phono preamp built in anywhere, and it works with either a moving-magnet or moving-coil cartridge, depending entirely on which phono preamp you choose to pair it with later.
Where Rega's Reference Engineering Earns Its Keep
A Skeletal Plinth, Inspired by the Naiad
The PL10's plinth strips away material the Naiad project proved wasn't actually needed, sandwiching an aerospace-developed Tancast 8 foam core between thin, rigid high-pressure laminate skins to cut mass without sacrificing stiffness.
A ceramic double-brace system, the first Rega ever put into production, ties the tonearm mount rigidly to the central bearing without adding the extra weight that a conventional heavy brace design would otherwise require.
An RB3000 Tonearm, Built Without Compromise
The hand-built RB3000 uses preloaded, zero-tolerance bearings adjusted to less than one-thousandth of a millimeter, giving it nearly friction-free movement with essentially no play for a mounted cartridge to fight against at all.
Its one-piece aluminum arm tube is hand-polished and assembled with very few mechanical joints and no adhesive, keeping the signal path between cartridge and bearing as stiff and direct as Rega can make it.
What Reviewers Are Saying
AVForums called the Planar 10 "superlative performance" that's "easy to set up and live with" and "extremely well made," concluding it improves on the already Editor's Choice-winning Planar 8 in every way.
Who Is the Rega PL10 Best For?
- You already own a reference-caliber cartridge: mount it straight onto the RB3000 instead of paying for one you'd have to remove
- You want to match a specific moving-coil or moving-magnet cartridge to your system: the RB3000 works especially well with Rega's own three-point Apheta 3 and Aphelion 2, but accepts other properly aligned cartridges too
- You want Rega's most refined chassis engineering: the skeletal plinth, ceramic double-brace, and RB3000 tonearm are the closest production version of what Rega's ultra-high-end Naiad project proved out
- You already have (or plan to add) a phono stage: the PL10 has no built-in phono preamp, and the preamp you need depends entirely on the cartridge you choose — MM for a moving-magnet, a compatible high-gain MC stage for a low-output moving-coil
- You're comfortable mounting and aligning a cartridge yourself, or having a dealer do it: some taller cartridges need a tonearm spacer for correct playing height, so budget time (or professional help) for setup
How Does It Connect to Your System?
The attached RCA cable runs to a phono preamp that matches your chosen cartridge — an MM phono input for a moving-magnet cartridge, or a compatible high-gain MC phono preamp for a low-output moving-coil. Never connect it straight into a standard line-level input.
After mounting your chosen cartridge, balance the tonearm and set tracking force and bias to that cartridge maker's own instructions. Some cartridges taller than Rega's own may need a tonearm spacer for correct playing height.
Pairs Well With
What finishes the system around a Rega PL10:
- Phono cartridges — the RB3000 pairs especially well with Rega's own three-point Apheta 3 and Aphelion 2
- Phono preamplifiers — choose MM or MC gain to match whichever cartridge you mount
- Audio racks — a firm, level, vibration-free shelf a reference turntable actually needs
- Record cleaning machines — a clean groove matters even more once resolution stops being the limiting factor
Frequently Asked Questions
Does this PL10 include a cartridge?
It doesn't. A compatible cartridge needs to be purchased and mounted separately, matched to whichever phono preamp you're pairing it with.
Can I use a moving-magnet cartridge?
Yes. The RB3000 accepts a compatible moving-magnet cartridge, connected to an MM phono preamp.
Can I use a moving-coil cartridge instead?
Yes, and it's an especially strong match — including Rega's own three-point Apheta 3 or Aphelion 2, connected to a compatible high-gain MC phono preamp.
Will every cartridge fit without a spacer?
Not necessarily. Some cartridges sit taller than Rega's own and may need a tonearm spacer for correct playing height — worth checking before you buy.
Does the PL10 include a phono preamp?
It doesn't. You need an external phono preamp, or an amplifier with a built-in phono input, that matches your cartridge's type and output.
Can it play 45 rpm records?
Yes. The included PL10 power supply provides electronic switching between 33⅓ and 45 rpm, with fine speed adjustment built in.
