10 Millimeters of Optiwhite Float Glass, 295 Across, With an 18 Millimeter Bore
This is Rega's own replacement platter for the Planar 2, sold each. It is 10 millimeters of Optiwhite float glass, 295 millimeters in diameter, with an 18 millimeter center hole and a clear frosted edge. Rega also offers it as an upgrade for the Planar 1, RP1 and P1.
A platter is a flywheel and a damping surface at the same time. Its mass smooths out what the motor does; its material decides what happens to the energy the stylus puts into the record. Glass is Rega's answer to the second job.
Optiwhite Glass, Cut to Rega's Dimensions
Fit and Materials
The platter measures 295 millimeters across — 11.6 inches — and 10 millimeters thick, with an 18 millimeter bore, or 0.7 inches. Those three figures are the fitment: diameter, thickness and the hole that goes over the sub-platter.
Optiwhite is a low-iron float glass, which is why the edge reads clear rather than carrying the green cast ordinary glass shows in section. Rega polishes that edge and frosts it, so the platter is finished from the side as well as the top.
It is the genuine Rega part for the Planar 2. On a Planar 1, RP1 or P1 it is a step up from the platter fitted as standard, which is thinner. Changing platter thickness changes record height, so re-check arm height afterwards where your arm allows it.
Who Is This Platter Best For?
- You own a Planar 2 and yours is chipped or broken — this is the original part at the original dimensions
- You own a Planar 1, RP1 or P1 — Rega offers it as an upgrade on those, at greater thickness than standard
- You want the genuine article — Rega's own Optiwhite glass rather than a generic disc of the right diameter
- You care how the deck looks — a clear polished and frosted edge instead of the green cast of ordinary glass
- You own a Planar 3 or Planar 6 — those take thicker platters; see turntable parts and add-ons
How Do You Fit It?
Slip the belt off and lift the old platter straight up and off the sub-platter — glass is heavier than it looks and less forgiving if you catch an edge. Lower the new one on, refit the belt and spin by hand to check it runs true. Re-check arm height if the thickness has changed.
Pairs Well With
What most owners upgrading a turntable shop next.
- Turntable belts — worth replacing while the platter is off
- Cartridge alignment tools — a change in record height means re-checking geometry
- Stylus force gauges — the other measurement to re-take afterwards
- Turntable mats — the surface the record actually sits on
