This is Rega's replacement platter for the Planar 3, sold each. It is 12 millimeters thick — half an inch — and 295 millimeters across, in float glass with an Optiwhite polished edge. Rega also lists it as compatible with the P2, RP3, P3-24 and P5.

Platter mass acts as a flywheel: the heavier the disc, the less any small variation in motor torque shows up as a variation in speed. Platter material decides the other half — what happens to the energy a stylus puts into the record on top of it.

Fit and Materials

The platter is 12 millimeters thick and 295 millimeters in diameter. That is the same diameter as the Planar 2 platter and two millimeters more thickness, which is both extra mass and a slightly higher record surface.

Optiwhite is low-iron float glass, so the polished edge reads clear rather than carrying the green tint ordinary glass shows in section. Rega makes the platter itself rather than buying in a disc and cutting it.

It fits the Planar 3, and Rega lists the P2, RP3, P3-24 and P5 as compatible. Fitting a thicker platter than the one you removed raises the record, so re-check arm height where the arm allows adjustment.

How Do You Fit It?

Take the belt off and lift the old platter straight up. Set the new one down on the sub-platter, refit the belt, and turn it by hand a few times to confirm it runs true and the belt sits square on the pulley. Re-check arm height and tracking force before playing.
