Rega's Most Accurate Belt, Standard on the Planar 8 and Planar 10
The Rega Reference EBLT is sold each, one belt per turntable. It is the belt fitted as standard to every Planar 8 and Planar 10 built on or after 8 March 2021, and Rega describes it as suitable for all its turntables.
A belt is the only thing between the motor and the platter, so every irregularity in it becomes a speed irregularity. Cross-sectional roundness is what decides that, and it is what Rega spent the development on.
Where the Accuracy Comes From, and What It Measures
Fit and Materials
Each belt is molded on Rega's own tooling from a proprietary compound, then cryogenically frozen and barreled to strip the molding flash away. What that leaves is a cross-section that is round all the way round, which is the property that governs speed stability.
Rega publishes the difference. Measured on the same Planar 1, weighted peak wow and flutter comes out at 0.253% on the standard belt, 0.162% on the Advanced EBLT and 0.075% on the Reference. Rega also puts the Reference belt's service life 50% beyond the previous model's.
It suits every Rega turntable. Rega highlights two cases in particular: the Planar 6, and any Planar 3 running the Neo TT PSU, where the power supply is already doing its part and the belt becomes the limit.
Who Is the Reference EBLT Best For?
- You own a Planar 8 or Planar 10 — this is the belt they ship with, so it is a like-for-like replacement
- You own a Planar 6 — one of the two decks Rega singles out for the Reference belt
- You run a Planar 3 with the Neo TT PSU — Rega's other recommendation, where the supply is already sorted
- You want the measured difference — 0.075% weighted peak wow and flutter against 0.253% for the standard belt
- Your turntable is not a Rega — this belt is cut to Rega's dimensions, so find your maker's part in turntable belts
How Do You Fit It?
Lift the platter off — on most decks it lifts straight up, sometimes with a sub-platter under it. Slip the old belt off the motor pulley and the sub-platter, and wipe both with a clean, dry cloth. Loop the new belt around the sub-platter, then over the pulley, keeping it flat and untwisted. Refit the platter and spin it by hand before switching on.
Pairs Well With
What most owners replacing a belt shop next.
- Stylus force gauges — the other setting that drifts quietly over the years
- Record cleaning solutions — a new belt deserves clean records under the stylus
- Record brushes — a dry sweep before every side
- Cartridge alignment tools — worth re-checking whenever the platter comes off
Frequently Asked Questions
How many do I need?
One. The belt is sold each, and every Rega turntable is a single-belt design.
Which Rega turntables does it fit?
All of them. It is standard on the Planar 8 and Planar 10 from March 2021, and Rega particularly recommends it for the Planar 6 and for a Planar 3 running the Neo TT PSU.
How long does a belt last?
Rega puts the Reference EBLT's life at 50% longer than the belt it replaced. Belts stretch and harden slowly rather than failing outright, so keeping a spare is the usual advice.
