This is Rega's tungsten counterweight, sold each. It has the same mass as the standard counterweight fitted to the RB303, RB300, RB301, RB600 and RB700 — but because tungsten is far denser than steel, that mass occupies a noticeably smaller body.

A counterweight does two jobs at once. Its mass sets tracking force, and its position on the stub sets how much inertia the arm carries. Change the weight and you change both, which is why a counterweight is a component rather than a lump of metal.

Tungsten is roughly two and a half times as dense as steel, so the same 100 grams comes in a much smaller diameter. That puts the mass closer to the centerline of the arm tube, which reduces the arm's tendency to rock about its own axis as the stylus works.

There is a practical benefit too. A smaller weight leaves more clearance behind the arm — useful under a tight dust cover, and useful again if you fit a cartridge with a deeper body than a Rega's, which pushes the balance point rearward.

How Do You Fit It?

Slide the old weight off the stub and the new one on. Balance the arm so it floats level with the stylus guard fitted, then set tracking force from that point. Because the body is smaller, it will sit at a different position on the stub for the same force — that is expected.
