A monoblock amplifier dedicates one whole chassis to a single channel, left or right, instead of splitting the work inside one shared box. The Rogue Audio M-180 "Dark" is a pair of these monoblocks. Each one uses a matched octet of KT120 output tubes to deliver 180 watts of tube power per channel.

An external switch lets you pick ultralinear mode, for more power and control, or pure triode mode, for a more relaxed, harmonically rich sound. Both 4-ohm and 8-ohm output taps are built in, so the M-180 Dark can match a wide range of speaker loads. A "slow start" turn-on sequence protects the tubes at power-up, so they last longer.

This is a power amplifier only. It needs a separate preamp, or an integrated amp with preamp outputs, feeding into it.

The "Dark" Difference

The M-180 Dark starts from the same amplifier circuit as the standard M-180, then upgrades nearly every part in it. Rhodium-plated Cardas binding posts and RCA jacks replace the standard connectors. Cardas internal wiring replaces the standard signal wiring. Telefunken and RCA small-signal tubes replace the stock preamp tubes.

Inside the power supply, Hex Fred high-speed diodes and polypropylene bypass capacitors improve on the stock parts. Nude Vishay resistors sit in the circuit's most critical spots. The result is housed in a black anodized, CNC-machined aluminum chassis, available in black or silver.
