One Box, Everything a Stereo Needs
Rogue Audio built the RP-1 v2 to be the only preamplifier most vinyl-and-line systems will ever need. Two 12AU7/ECC802 tubes run in a mu-follower circuit, delivering the warmth Rogue is known for at an entry price. The v2 revision adds upgraded capacitors throughout the signal path for a quieter, more refined result. A built-in phono stage handles both moving-magnet and moving-coil cartridges. Gain is selectable at 44dB or 56dB, and cartridge loading is user-adjustable, so the RP-1 v2 doesn't force a separate phono preamp into the budget.
A discrete 1-watt headphone amplifier lives on the front panel. It automatically mutes the main outputs when you plug in. A home theater bypass with unity gain lets a surround processor take over the front channels for movie nights, without disturbing your stereo settings. An OLED display shows volume, balance, and source, dimmable for dark-room listening. A seven-button metal remote covers the essentials.
Four line inputs, one phono input, two variable output pairs, and one fixed pair, all on gold-plated RCA jacks, cover a genuine two-channel system without complication.
Hand-Built in Pennsylvania
Every Rogue preamp, including the RP-1 v2, is hand-assembled at the company's Pennsylvania facility. Each unit is tested, burned in, and auditioned before it ships. The chassis is compact, just over 15 inches wide and 16 pounds, finished in black or silver machined aluminum to match the rest of the Rogue line. Rogue backs it with a 3-year limited warranty, 6 months on the tubes.
The RP-1 v2 sits at the entry point of Rogue's preamplifier lineup. It shares its mu-follower tube circuit with the step-up RP-3 and RP-5 v2 above it.
What Reviewers Are Saying
Chris Groppi of Home Theater HiFi reviewed the original RP-1 on November 7, 2016. That model shares the v2's mu-follower circuit and tube complement, with upgraded capacitors added since. He wrote that it "sounds particularly smooth, spacious and at ease," called the home theater bypass "the best I have encountered in a stereo preamp," and concluded it's "a benchmark for value-priced high end preamps." Because this review predates the v2's capacitor upgrade, treat the sonic impressions as representative rather than a review of the current revision.
Who Is This Preamplifier Best For?
- You're building your first serious system — a phono stage, headphone amp, and home theater bypass all live in one chassis.
- You play vinyl on MM or MC cartridges — selectable 44dB/56dB gain and adjustable loading cover both.
- You listen on headphones often — the built-in 1-watt amp mutes the speakers automatically when you plug in.
- Your system doubles for movies — the unity-gain bypass hands the front channels to your processor cleanly.
- If you want more line inputs or a step-up phono stage, Rogue's RP-5 v2 adds inputs and a Triton II-derived phono section built for serious vinyl collections.
How Does It Connect to Your System?
Connect the variable RCA outputs to your power amplifier, with the second pair free for a subwoofer or a second zone. Your turntable joins the phono input with gain and loading set for your cartridge, three more line sources fill the remaining inputs, your surround processor uses the bypass loop, and headphones plug into the front panel.
One box, four functions, no compromises for a starting system.
