Sixty Years of Hi-Fi, Aimed at Your Headphones
Rotel has built serious hi-fi since 1961, and the DX-3 brings that engineering to a single compact box: a Class-A headphone amplifier, an ESS-based DAC, a Bluetooth receiver, and a full remote-controlled preamplifier, all behind a clean front panel with a color display.
The DAC section is built on the 32-bit ESS ES9028PRO chip, handling PCM up to 32-bit/384kHz over USB and DSD up to 11.2MHz. The fully balanced headphone stage delivers 1.4 watts into 32 ohms from the 4.4mm balanced output (2.8 watts into 16 ohms) and 383mW from the 6.35mm jack, with vanishingly low distortion and output impedance under 0.6 ohms. Rotel recommends headphones from 16 to 300 ohms, which covers the vast majority of models sold today.
Bluetooth with aptX HD and AAC handles wireless streaming from a phone, and the whole unit is Roon Tested for easy integration into a Roon library.
More Than a Headphone Amp
The DX-3's RCA preamp outputs and included remote turn it into the control center of a compact system: connect powered speakers or a power amplifier, and one volume knob runs both your headphone and speaker listening. Inputs cover USB, coaxial, optical, and analog RCA, so a computer, TV, CD transport, and phone can all stay connected.
Build follows Rotel tradition: a low-noise linear power supply feeding a true Class-A headphone stage, in an aluminum chassis that measures just 8.5" wide and weighs a solid 7.1 pounds. It comes in silver or black.
What Reviewers Are Saying
What Hi-Fi's Ketan Bharadia awarded the DX-3 five stars in a February 13, 2026 review, calling it "a versatile and talented performer that ticks an awful lot of boxes," with sound that's "clean, crisp and impressively detailed," "impressive bass grip," and "a spacious and focused soundfield." Rudolfs of Headfonia scored it 4.3 out of 5 in an August 6, 2025 review, praising its build quality and its breadth of features for the price.
Who Is This Amplifier Best For?
- You want DAC, headphone amp, preamp, and Bluetooth in one box — the DX-3 replaces a stack of separates on a desk or in a rack.
- You own headphones with balanced 4.4mm cables — the fully balanced output delivers nearly four times the single-ended power.
- You want it to run powered speakers too — RCA preamp outputs and a remote make it a complete compact system hub.
- You trust proven hi-fi engineering — Rotel has built amplifiers since 1961, and it shows in the measurements.
- If your headphones are 600-ohm models or very insensitive planars, the DX-3's power is aimed at 16-300 ohm loads — a bigger dedicated amp serves extreme headphones better.
How Does It Connect to Your System?
Connect a computer over USB, digital sources over coaxial or optical, an analog source to the RCA input, or stream from your phone over Bluetooth. Headphones plug into the balanced 4.4mm or 6.35mm front jacks, and the RCA preamp outputs feed powered speakers or an amplifier.
The color display shows source and volume at a glance, and the included remote controls everything from across the room.
