Rotel Shrank a Real Amplifier to Fit Your Desk

Rotel calls the DX-5 a personal audio integrated amplifier, which is a careful way of saying desktop amp. It measures 8 1/2 inches wide, 3 inches tall, and 10 inches deep, and takes up less space than a sheet of paper. Inside is a proper Class AB amplifier, not a compromise. It comes in black or silver.

Power is 25 watts per channel into 8 ohms, rising to 33 watts into 4 ohms. Those are modest numbers, and Rotel does not pretend otherwise. On a desk, or with reasonably sensitive speakers in a small room, they go further than the spec sheet suggests.

One Cable to the TV, and You're Done

The HDMI ARC input is the feature that changes what this amp is for. Connect it to your TV and the DX-5 becomes its sound system. HDMI CEC comes along too, so the TV remote controls volume and the amp follows the TV on and off. Add the subwoofer output and you have a 2.1 setup.

The rest of the connections are digital-first. You get one coaxial and one optical input, a PC-USB port, and Bluetooth with aptX HD and AAC. There is one analog RCA input. A 1/4-inch headphone jack sits on the front, next to a full-color display and a machined volume knob.

Where the DAC Does the Heavy Lifting

Conversion runs through an ESS ES9039Q2M Sabre chip. Over PC-USB it handles PCM to 384kHz and 32-bit, plus DSD to four times rate and DoP to double rate. The coaxial and optical inputs take PCM to 24-bit/192kHz. Windows users install the supplied driver to unlock Class 2.0. The DX-5 is Roon Tested.

Ketan Bharadia reviewed the DX-5 for What Hi-Fi? on March 23, 2026, scoring five for sound and five for build. His pros list reads "Clean, crisp and composed presentation" and "Fluid dynamics with plenty of detail".

David Price gave it 7.5 out of 10 and an Applause Award at StereoNET on December 15, 2025. He called it "An open, even-handed and musically engaging performer" whose "build quality for an amp of this price is superlative".
