Open Front and Back, So Cables Reach

There is no back panel, no side panel and no door anywhere on the VL. Warm air leaves a component through its top and its flanks without meeting anything, which is the one thing a closed cabinet cannot offer whatever is cut into it.

The open back matters just as much for what plugs in. Tonearm leads, a ground wire and power cords all have to get somewhere, and a rack this wide would be very awkward to live with if you had to reach around it.

Build It Upside Down

That is the trick, and it comes from someone who has built one. Start with the top shelf face down and work up from there, and the rack assembles far more easily than trying to hold shelves level while you thread posts underneath them.

Lay the parts out first and check them against the sheet before you start. Some of the bolts have different thread depths at each end, so a methodical five minutes at the beginning saves backtracking later.

One practical note: the shelves are 50 inches long and the carton is heavy. Getting the box to the room where the rack will live is a two-person job, and it is worth clearing the floor around it before you open anything.

Where the Record Collection Actually Lives

Around two hundred LPs fit in the bottom bay, split between its two sections and standing upright with their spines facing out. That is a collection you read across rather than one you dig through, sitting directly below the deck that plays it.

At 16.1 inches deep and wider than most sideboards, the VL reads as furniture rather than as equipment. Black or walnut shelves in polymeric laminate over 0.9-inch MDF, on a black frame, and the spines of the records become part of how it looks.
