The RS Oyster — The Part That Keeps an Oyster Playing
Sumiko's replacement stylus for the Oyster moving magnet cartridge, sold singly. A 0.7 mil spherical diamond on an aluminum cantilever, it slides onto the front of an Oyster body with the cartridge still on the arm.
This one matters more than most replacement parts. Sumiko no longer builds the Oyster cartridge, so when the tip finally wears out the stylus is not simply the cheaper of two options — it is the only thing keeping a working cartridge working.
Fit, Profile and Compatibility
Which Bodies It Belongs On
Sumiko lists exactly one replacement stylus unit for the Oyster, and this is it. The fit is one to one: this stylus belongs on an Oyster body and nothing else in the Sumiko range substitutes for it.
Sumiko's current moving magnet cartridges — Rainier, Olympia, Moonstone, Wellfleet and Amethyst — share one interchangeable group of styli. This is not part of it. Those assemblies will not serve here and this one will not serve there.
The Numbers That Matter at Setup
On an Oyster body Sumiko publishes 5.0 mV of output — the highest of any cartridge the company lists — with a frequency response of 30 Hz – 20 kHz, 22 dB of channel separation and compliance of 10 × 10⁻⁶ cm/dyn at 100 Hz.
Tracking force is unusual here: 1.5 to 2.5 g, with 2.3 g recommended. That is heavier than anything else in the Sumiko range, so if you are working from memory or from another cartridge's figures, check the arm.
Who Is the RS Oyster Best For?
- Your Oyster is worn — with the cartridge out of production, the stylus is how it stays in service
- You want the original voicing — a 0.7 mil spherical is what the Oyster was specified with
- You need output — 5.0 mV suits a phono input that is short of gain
- You keep a spare — for a cartridge no longer made, that is worth more than it used to be
- Yours is a Rainier, Olympia, Moonstone, Wellfleet, Amethyst, Pearl or Black Pearl — each takes its own stylus, and they are listed in replacement styli
How Do You Fit It?
The cartridge stays in the headshell. Hold the fitted assembly by its plastic housing, draw it straight forward off the body, and press the new one on until it seats. Overhang and offset never move, so set tracking force to 2.3 g and that is the job finished.
Pairs Well With
What most Oyster owners shop alongside.
- Stylus force gauges — how you set the 2.3 g this one asks for
- Stylus cleaning — what decides how long the new tip lasts
- Record cleaning solutions — a clean record is the cheapest stylus insurance there is
- Phono cartridges — if the body is damaged rather than the tip
Frequently Asked Questions
Will it fit my cartridge?
It fits the Sumiko Oyster and only the Oyster. The current Rainier, Olympia, Moonstone, Wellfleet and Amethyst share a different interchangeable group, and the Pearl and Black Pearl each take their own.
What tracking force should I set?
Sumiko specifies 1.5 to 2.5 g and recommends 2.3 g. That is heavier than the rest of the range, so set it deliberately rather than reusing a figure from another cartridge.
Is it worth replacing the stylus on a cartridge this old?
Usually, yes. The generator and body do not wear the way a diamond does, so a fresh tip restores the cartridge to specification for a fraction of what a replacement would cost.
How long does a stylus last?
Around 1,000 hours is the usual figure, though it turns on how clean your records are and how accurately the cartridge is set up. A worn tip damages records, so replace it on schedule rather than by ear.
