The VPI 45 RPM Kit — Cleaning 7-Inch Singles on a Machine Built for LPs
An add-on kit that lets a VPI record cleaning machine handle 7-inch 45 rpm singles. It is sold as a kit of two parts: the vacuum pick-up tube sized for a 7-inch record, and the tube holder it sits in.
Singles are usually the dirtiest records in a collection and the least often cleaned. They were played hardest, stored worst, and until now your machine has had nothing cut to the right size to deal with them.
Fit and Function
Why a Smaller Record Needs Its Own Parts
A pick-up tube's slot spans the playing area of the record it was cut for. Put a 7-inch single under a tube designed for a 12-inch LP and most of the slot is drawing air over empty platter, which costs you the suction that should be lifting fluid out of the groove.
Which Machines It Fits
VPI states the kit is compatible with most of its record cleaning machines, "with the exception of the original style 16.5 and the Cyclone." Those two are the ones to check for before ordering.
Alignment is handled for you. VPI notes that "A guide slot on the vacuum pick-up tube assures fast and easy proper alignment," which means swapping between record sizes is not a setup job every time you change format.
Who Is This Kit Best For?
- You collect 7-inch singles — this is what gives your machine a way to clean them
- You buy used 45s — the format most likely to arrive filthy and least likely to have been cleaned
- You already own a VPI machine — the kit adds a capability rather than replacing anything
- You switch record sizes often — the guide slot means alignment is not a setup job each time
- Your machine is an original-style 16.5 or a Cyclone — VPI excludes both; check yours in record cleaning accessories before ordering
How Do You Fit It?
Unplug the machine. Remove the standard tube and holder, fit the 45 rpm holder, and drop in the matching tube using its guide slot to set the alignment. Clean a single you do not care about first, and confirm it comes off dry across the whole playing surface.
Pairs Well With
What most singles collectors keep alongside.
- Record cleaning solutions — the fluid the machine is there to remove
- Record cleaning accessories — the rest of the spares and consumables
- Record cleaning machines — if you are still choosing one
- Stylus cleaning — a clean record deserves a clean stylus
Frequently Asked Questions
Will it fit my machine?
VPI says most of its record cleaning machines, excepting the original style 16.5 and the Cyclone. Identify which machine you have before ordering — the exclusions are specific.
How many do I need?
One kit, which includes both the tube and the holder. You keep your existing 12-inch parts and change between them as needed.
Does it replace my standard tube permanently?
You swap between them rather than choosing one. The guide slot on the 45 rpm tube makes getting the alignment right quick enough that changing formats is not a chore.
