VPI's Standard Belt, for Every Single-Belt VPI Turntable
The VPI BL001 is sold each, one belt per turntable. It is VPI's standard drive belt for its single-belt decks, which covers a long list of models — and the list, rather than any measurement, is how you tell whether it is the right one.
VPI builds several turntables in dual-motor, dual-belt and three-pulley versions alongside the single-belt ones. Those variants need different belts, so the qualifier attached to each model name below is doing real work.
The Fitment List, and the Exceptions Inside It
Fit and Materials
The BL001 fits the HW-19 Series, the TNT-3 and TNT 3.5 without a three-pulley system, the Aries Series without a flywheel, the Scout Series without a dual motor, the Classic Series, the Traveler Series, the Nomad Series, the Cliffwood, the Player, the 21 Series, and the Avenger without a dual motor.
Read the exclusions carefully. A TNT with three pulleys, an Aries with a flywheel, or a Scout or Avenger with dual motors is a different drive arrangement and takes a different belt, even though the model name is the same.
It is VPI's own part. On a turntable where the belt is the only link between motor and platter, a generic loop of the right length is not the same thing — section consistency is what holds speed, and that is a manufacturing property.
Who Is the BL001 Best For?
- You own a single-belt VPI — the Classic, Traveler, Nomad, Cliffwood, Player, 21 Series and HW-19 among them
- Your Scout or Avenger has a single motor — the dual-motor versions take a different belt
- Your Aries has no flywheel, or your TNT no three-pulley system — those are the single-belt configurations this fits
- You want the authentic part — VPI's own belt rather than a generic equivalent of the same length
- Your VPI runs dual motors, a flywheel or three pulleys — those drives need their own belts, listed in turntable belts
How Do You Fit It?
Lift the platter off — on most decks it lifts straight up, sometimes with a sub-platter under it. Slip the old belt off the motor pulley and the sub-platter, and wipe both with a clean, dry cloth. Loop the new belt around the sub-platter, then over the pulley, keeping it flat and untwisted. Refit the platter and spin it by hand before switching on.
Pairs Well With
What most owners replacing a belt shop next.
- Stylus force gauges — the other setting that drifts quietly over the years
- Record cleaning solutions — a new belt deserves clean records under the stylus
- Record brushes — a dry sweep before every side
- Cartridge alignment tools — worth re-checking whenever the platter comes off
Frequently Asked Questions
How many do I need?
One, for a single-belt turntable. If your VPI runs a dual-motor or flywheel arrangement, it is not a single-belt deck and needs the belt specified for that drive.
Which VPI turntables does it fit?
HW-19 Series; TNT-3 and TNT 3.5 without a three-pulley system; Aries Series without a flywheel; Scout Series without a dual motor; Classic, Traveler and Nomad Series; Cliffwood; Player; 21 Series; and Avenger without a dual motor.
When should I replace a belt?
When it looks glazed or feels slack, when the platter takes longer than it used to to reach speed, or when speed will not settle. A belt hardens and stretches gradually, so the change creeps up on you.
