A 48-Pound Cherry Base on HW-40 Feet for a Full-Size Turntable
The VPI Cherry Isolation Base is sold singly. It is a solid cherry platform, 27 by 21 inches and 2.25 inches thick, weighing 48 pounds before its feet. It stands on VPI's HW-40 isolation feet, the same feet fitted to the HW-40 anniversary turntable.
A heavy turntable on a rack still picks up footsteps and speaker energy through the shelf. VPI makes the base to put a damped mass of hardwood and its own isolation feet between them, so the turntable rides on the base rather than the shelf.
VPI built the base with a family-owned woodworking company to the dimensions of its original TNT Stand Base, so it carries VPI's largest decks and most other full-size turntables on the market.
Sized to the TNT Base, Finished as Furniture
Fit, Load and Materials
VPI publishes no load rating. The base is 27 by 21 inches, the footprint of VPI's TNT Stand Base, so any turntable that fit that stand fits this one, including decks with outboard motors and flywheels. Measure the plinth, motor and any flywheel together before ordering.
The platform is 2.25 inches thick and the HW-40 feet add to that, so allow about 3 inches plus the turntable when checking a shelf or rack. At 48 pounds before the feet, it is a two-person lift onto a high shelf.
The base is cherry, finished as a piece of furniture, with VPI's proprietary damping in the assembly. The HW-40 feet are VPI's own isolators, the ones it chose for its anniversary turntable. No spikes touch the shelf.
Who Is the Cherry Isolation Base Best For?
- You own a VPI turntable with an outboard motor or flywheel — the 27 by 21 inch top carries the plinth and the motor on one surface
- Your full-size turntable sits on a rack or credenza — 48 pounds of cherry and four HW-40 feet sit between it and the furniture
- You want the base to look like furniture — solid cherry, finished to match a living room rather than a workshop
- You already run HW-40 feet and want the same under the whole deck — the base uses them as its own isolation
- Your turntable is a compact single-chassis deck — a smaller isolation platform is the lower rung, and this base would overhang most shelves
How Do You Set It Up?
Clear the shelf and check that it carries 48 pounds plus the turntable and is at least 27 by 21 inches. Set the base in place with the feet down and confirm it sits level. Lower the turntable onto it, centered, with the motor and flywheel on the same surface. Re-level the turntable and listen.
Pairs Well With
What most Cherry Isolation Base owners shop next.
- Turntables — the component that gains most from a still, level base
- Turntable accessories — levels, mats and clamps for the same setup
- Phono preamplifiers — the next component in the vinyl chain
- Record cleaning accessories — a clean groove is the other half of quiet playback
Frequently Asked Questions
How many do I need?
One per turntable. The base is sold singly and carries the whole deck, including an outboard motor and flywheel.
Will my turntable fit?
The top is 27 by 21 inches, the size of VPI's TNT Stand Base. Measure the plinth, motor pod and flywheel as they sit together, and allow room for the tonearm's swing and a dust cover if you use one.
How much height does it add?
The cherry is 2.25 inches thick and the HW-40 feet add more, so allow about 3 inches plus the turntable's own height.
Is it only for VPI turntables?
VPI makes it for its own decks, but any turntable that fits inside 27 by 21 inches sits on it. The feet and the damped hardwood do the same job under another brand.
How heavy is it?
The base weighs 48 pounds before the feet. Check that the shelf or rack is rated for the base plus the turntable, and plan a two-person lift.
