The JMW-10 3D Reference — A Printed Armwand With No Joints in It
A 10-inch unipivot tonearm built around a 3D-printed armwand of non-resonant epoxy. The wand is a single piece, from the headshell to the bearing housing, with the internal cable run and a 160-gram counterweight.
The reason to print an armwand is that a conventional one is assembled. Every joint between headshell, tube and bearing is a place energy collects and returns to the cartridge. A printed wand has no joints to store it.
Design and Engineering
The Unipivot, and Where the Weight Sits
The arm balances on a single point, which all but eliminates bearing friction. VPI's own manual draws out what makes this one different: “Unlike other unipivot arms, the JMW-3D lateral balance weight does not hang off to the side of the arm.”
Instead it sits around the bottom of the upper bearing housing. VPI's account of the effect is direct — “This increases mass below the pivot and increases arm stability.” A unipivot with its mass low behind the pivot point is a good deal less inclined to rock.
Anti-Skating, and VPI's View of It
VPI's manual is unusually blunt here: “THE JMW-3D ARM NEEDS VERY LITTLE ANTI-SKATING FORCE IF ANY AT ALL.” The company says it reached that after two decades of listening tests on its own arms. Whatever you conclude, start from the manual rather than from habit.
Azimuth is set by the lateral balance weight, using a thin rod that lies behind the cartridge screws as a visual guide. VTA is set at a tower with thumbscrews, adjustable while a record plays. The arm ends in a Lemo connector.
Geometry and Fit
The Numbers
Pivot to spindle is 258 mm and effective length 273.4 mm, giving 15.4 mm of overhang at an offset angle of 19.98°. VPI quotes average RMS distortion of 0.31%. Those figures are shared across VPI's 10-inch arms, so an armboard drilled for one of them is drilled for this.
Fitting turns on that 258 mm. The JMW-10 mounting is VPI's own, so on a VPI turntable it drops into the existing base, and on anything else it needs an armboard drilled and cut for the job.

How Do You Install It?
Set the base 258 mm from the spindle, hang the wand on the pivot and connect the Lemo. Mount the cartridge, then use VPI's supplied alignment jig — it locates against the bearing well and over the spindle — to set overhang. Balance the arm, set tracking force, then azimuth with the rod as a guide. Level the turntable first.

Will it fit my turntable?
