Design and Engineering

The VTA Tower

The tower is large and knurled, with a smooth, precise action that makes setting vertical tracking angle straightforward — including while a record is playing, which is the only way most people ever really judge it.

Getting VTA right matters more with fine stylus profiles than with simple ones. A Shibata or line-contact diamond reads a narrow band of the groove wall, and it reads a different band if the arm is not at the height it was designed for.

Support in Two Places

VPI redesigned the base to hold the arm at the VTA tower and again at the cueing mechanism, rather than at one point. VPI's manual states the result plainly: the support gives the arm much greater rigidity and, in their words, deeper and tighter bass response.

A base has no moving parts to speak of and makes no sound of its own. What it decides is how firmly the pivot is held relative to the record — which is why VPI treats it as part of the tonearm rather than as hardware.

It is a unipivot base built for VPI's JMW-10 unipivot arms. The armwand and the base are a matched pair — a gimbal Fatboy does not hang on a unipivot base, and neither does a 9-inch or 12-inch JMW wand.

Mounting follows VPI's usual 10-inch geometry, so the armboard needs the pivot at 258 mm from the spindle. On a VPI turntable that is how the deck is already drilled.

How Do You Install It?

Mount the base to an armboard with the pivot 258 mm from the spindle and level it. Hang the armwand on the pivot, connect the arm cable, and set VTA at the tower so the arm sits parallel to the record with the stylus down. Then balance, set tracking force and set azimuth on the wand itself.
