The VPI Red Dragon Turntable combines bold visual design with the substantial mechanical engineering required for serious analog playback. A Chassis Built to Control Resonance

The Red Dragon’s substantial chassis combines dense MDF with metal reinforcement and carefully selected damping materials. Its layered construction is designed to prevent vibration from traveling between the motor, platter, tonearm and supporting surface.

The choice of finishes gives the turntable two dramatically different personalities. Gray Ash offers a restrained, contemporary appearance, while Red Leather transforms the Red Dragon into an unmistakable statement piece.

Mechanically Isolated Motor and Triple-Belt Drive

The high-torque AC synchronous motor is housed in a mechanically separate enclosure positioned within the chassis cutout. Separating the motor from the platter and tonearm helps prevent motor vibration from reaching the cartridge.

A precision-machined pulley drives the platter through three belts. The triple-belt arrangement provides a strong, stable transfer of rotational force while retaining the mechanical isolation advantages of belt drive.

Integrated speed-control electronics use two low-distortion oscillators and Class AB amplification to generate clean power for the motor. This allows convenient speed selection while maintaining accurate platter rotation.

A 20-Pound Aluminum Platter

The 12-inch platter is machined from solid aluminum and incorporates an MDF damping layer to control ringing. Its substantial 20-pound mass provides rotational inertia, helping the turntable maintain consistent speed through demanding musical passages.

The platter rotates on an inverted bearing with a stainless-steel shaft and phosphor-bronze bushing. This bearing arrangement provides a stable rotational center while supporting smooth, quiet operation.

The VPI Prime Gimbal 10-3D Tonearm

The included 10-inch Prime Gimbal 10-3D tonearm uses a full gimbal bearing for secure, predictable movement in both the horizontal and vertical planes. Its 3D-printed arm tube is manufactured from a combination of materials selected to control resonance without adding excessive mass.

The tonearm provides an adjustable counterweight, azimuth side weights and vertical tracking angle adjustment. A LEMO connection makes it possible to disconnect the tonearm cable without disturbing the cartridge or internal wiring.

VPI copper-weave internal wiring carries the cartridge’s low-level signal through the tonearm. Because no cartridge is included, the Red Dragon can be matched with a wide selection of premium moving-magnet or moving-coil designs.

Purpose-Built Isolation Feet

The Red Dragon rests on machined Delrin and aluminum feet with vibration-damping polymer cores. These feet help isolate the chassis from floor vibration, loudspeaker energy and movement within the equipment rack.

Setup and System Matching

The VPI Red Dragon is shipped partially disassembled to protect its precision components. Setup includes installing the isolation feet, motor enclosure, platter, belts, tonearm and record clamp, followed by leveling the chassis.

Because the turntable is sold without a cartridge, cartridge installation and alignment are required. Tracking force, overhang, azimuth, anti-skating and vertical tracking angle must be adjusted for the selected cartridge.

The finished turntable weighs approximately 58 pounds, so at least two people should be available for unpacking and placement. Position it on a rigid, level stand with enough space for the motor, platter and tonearm.
