Four Decades of VPI Turntable Design in One Platform
The VPI Signature 21 reflects more than 40 years of turntable development at VPI’s New Jersey factory. This high-end belt-drive turntable combines a 66-pound layered chassis, 20-pound aluminum platter, separate motor assembly, and VPI’s 10-inch Fatboy Gimbal 3D tonearm.
It is made for experienced vinyl listeners building a carefully matched analog system. No cartridge or phono preamp is included, giving you the freedom to choose components that suit your records, amplifier, and listening goals.
High Mass Creates a Stable Playback Foundation
The chassis combines vinyl-wrapped MDF, aluminum, and stainless steel. These bonded layers form a rigid base for the platter bearing and tonearm. Four isolation feet help separate the turntable from vibration carried through the equipment rack or floor.
A 20-pound, 12-inch aluminum platter adds substantial rotating mass. VPI specifies 0.03% wow and flutter, 0.04% speed accuracy, and rumble 82 dB down. The included stainless-steel center weight holds the record against the platter during playback.
A Fully Adjustable Fatboy Gimbal Tonearm
The included Fatboy Gimbal 10-3D tonearm uses a full-gimbal bearing and a 3D-printed arm structure made with epoxy resin, Delrin, copper, aluminum, and steel. Nordost Reference internal wiring carries the cartridge signal to the tonearm’s Lemo connection.
You can adjust tracking force, vertical tracking angle, azimuth, and anti-skating. The 10.7-gram effective mass supports a wide range of cartridges, but cartridge weight and compliance should be checked before purchase. Professional installation is recommended if you are not comfortable with precision cartridge alignment.
Is This Right for You?
The Signature 21 is a strong fit for a custom, high-end vinyl system:
- Best use: Choose it when you want a high-mass manual turntable with broad cartridge adjustment and a premium gimbal tonearm.
- System requirements: You will need a compatible phono cartridge, phono preamp or phono-equipped amplifier, and shielded phono interconnects.
- Upgrade path: VPI offers a periphery ring, Reference feet, and Analog Drive System when you are ready to expand the platform.
- Honest limitation: This is not a plug-and-play or automatic turntable. It requires cartridge installation, manual operation, and a sturdy support that can hold 66 pounds.
Setup & Installation
Place the Signature 21 on a rigid, level surface that can safely hold its weight. Its footprint is 19.5 inches wide by 13.75 inches deep, while the full assembly measures 21.375 inches wide, 15.75 inches deep, and 11 inches high. Leave added clearance for the tonearm wiring and normal record handling.
Install the feet, motor, platter, belt, tonearm, and cartridge before use. The supplied alignment jig, stylus-force gauge, and setup hardware help with adjustment. Switching between 33⅓ and 45 rpm requires moving the belt between the two motor-pulley diameters.
A cartridge and phono preamp are sold separately. Browse Audio Advisor’s phono cartridges and phono preamplifiers, or ask our experts to help match both components.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the VPI Signature 21 include a cartridge?
No. The Fatboy Gimbal tonearm is included, but the cartridge is sold separately. This lets you choose an MM or MC cartridge suited to your phono stage.
Do I need a separate phono preamp?
Yes, unless your amplifier or receiver has a compatible phono input. Match the phono stage to the cartridge type, output level, and recommended loading.
How do I change between 33⅓ and 45 rpm?
Move the drive belt to the matching diameter on the two-step motor pulley. The optional VPI Analog Drive System adds electronic speed selection and adjustment.
Is the Signature 21 difficult to set up?
It requires more setup than a pre-mounted turntable. VPI supplies alignment and measuring tools, but professional cartridge installation is recommended if you have not aligned a high-end tonearm before.
Does it include a dust cover?
No. A compatible freestanding dust cover must be purchased separately.
What is the warranty?
VPI provides a five-year limited warranty to the original retail purchaser. Save the original box and packing inserts for returns, moving, and warranty service.
