Signature 21 Engineering, Trickled Down to a More Accessible Chassis
The VPI Signature DS brings several key design elements down from the flagship Signature 21 into a more accessible high-end turntable. A double-stacked chassis, 20-pound aluminum platter, HW-40 isolation feet, and 10-inch Gimbal 3D tonearm form a substantial platform for a cartridge you choose yourself.
A VTA Tower lets you adjust vertical tracking angle on the fly, without removing or disassembling the tonearm at all, a genuine convenience feature carried over from VPI's higher-tier models directly.
This turntable ships without a cartridge and needs a separate phono preamp, since neither is built in. It's fully manual too, so changing speed between 33⅓ and 45 rpm means moving the belt yourself.
Where the Double-Stacked Chassis Earns Its Keep
A Layered Chassis, Built to Control Resonance
The chassis combines two layers of vinyl-wrapped MDF with a steel damping plate sandwiched between them, giving the platter bearing and tonearm mount a rigid, high-mass foundation while keeping unwanted chassis resonance firmly under control.
Four adjustable HW-40 isolation feet, the same design used on VPI's five-figure anniversary-edition turntable, support the chassis and help isolate it from stray vibration coming through the rack or floor — though a rigid, level surface underneath still matters quite a bit.
An Outboard Motor and a 20-Pound Platter
A 300-rpm AC synchronous motor sits in its own separate aluminum-and-steel housing rather than inside the main chassis itself, keeping motor vibration mechanically apart from the platter and tonearm, with the drive pulley machined to within ±0.0005 inch.
The 12-inch aluminum platter weighs a full 20 pounds, giving the Signature DS substantial rotational inertia, while the included Gimbal 10-3D tonearm's 10.2-gram effective mass suits a genuinely wide range of cartridge weights and compliances out there.
Who Is the VPI Signature DS Best For?
- You want Signature-tier engineering below the flagship Signature 21: the double-stacked chassis and HW-40 feet are genuine trickle-down features, not cosmetic ones
- You already own a cartridge you want to keep using: mount it straight onto the Gimbal tonearm instead of paying for one you'd have to remove
- You want on-the-fly VTA adjustment: the VTA Tower lets you fine-tune arm height without disassembling the tonearm mount
- You already have (or plan to add) a phono stage: the Signature DS has no built-in phono preamp, so it needs a compatible Phono preamplifiers
- You want Signature sound in a manageable chassis — the same tonearm and platter size, in a lighter two-layer build
How Does It Connect to Your System?
The output jacks need a phono preamp that matches your chosen cartridge — an MM input for a moving-magnet design, or a compatible high-gain MC stage for a moving-coil. Never connect the Signature DS straight into a standard line-level input.
After mounting your chosen cartridge, balance the tonearm and set tracking force, VTA, azimuth, and anti-skate to that cartridge maker's own instructions. Switching between 33⅓ and 45 rpm means moving the belt to the other step on the motor pulley.
Pairs Well With
What finishes the system around a VPI Signature DS:
- Phono cartridges — the Gimbal tonearm's 10.2g effective mass suits a wide range of moving-magnet and moving-coil cartridges
- Phono preamplifiers — required since the Signature DS has no built-in phono stage
- Audio racks — a firm, level, vibration-free shelf a 44-pound turntable actually needs
- Record cleaning machines — a clean groove matters even more once resolution stops being the limiting factor
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Signature DS include a cartridge?
It doesn't. A compatible moving-magnet or moving-coil cartridge needs to be purchased and mounted separately.
Does it have a built-in phono preamp?
It doesn't. You need an external phono preamp, or an amplifier with a phono input, that matches your cartridge's type and output.
How is this different from the Signature 21?
The Signature DS uses a lighter double-stacked chassis instead of the Signature 21's heavier build, while sharing the same 20-pound platter size and Gimbal 10-3D tonearm design.
What is the VTA Tower for?
It lets you raise or lower the tonearm's height on the fly to match different record and cartridge combinations, without removing or disassembling the arm mount.
How do I change speed from 33⅓ to 45 rpm?
Move the drive belt to the other step on the motor pulley. VPI's optional Analog Drive System adds electronic speed selection.
What upgrades does VPI offer down the road?
A periphery ring clamp, Reference feet, and a Fatboy tonearm (Gimbal or Unipivot) are all compatible upgrades if you want to push the Signature DS further later on.
