One Piece of Solid Delrin That Screws Down on a VPI Spindle

The VPI Standard Delrin Record Clamp is sold each, one per turntable. It is machined from a single piece of Delrin and threads onto the spindle of a VPI turntable, drawing the record down onto the platter as you turn it.

A record only takes on the platter's damping where the two are actually touching. A screw clamp does not rely on its own mass to make that contact — it borrows the spindle thread for leverage, so a light clamp can hold a record down harder than a heavy weight sitting on it.

The clamp is one piece of solid Delrin, the engineering acetal VPI uses throughout its turntables. Delrin is stiff, self-lubricating and dimensionally stable, and it meets the record label without the hardness of metal.

VPI does not publish a weight, but a Delrin puck of this size adds well under 1 pound to the platter bearing. That is deliberate: the clamping force comes from the thread, not from mass, so the bearing and the drive motor see very little extra.

It fits VPI turntables with a threaded platter spindle. That covers most of the range, and it is the one thing to confirm before ordering — a smooth spindle has nothing for the clamp to thread onto.

How Do You Use It?

Set the record on the platter and let it settle. Thread the clamp onto the spindle and turn it down by hand until you feel the record draw onto the platter. To check the coupling, tap the run-out area near the label with a fingernail: a dull tap means the record is against the platter, a ring means it is not yet. Hand-tight is the whole range — no tool.
