To achieve their relatively high output voltage, MM moving magnet phono cartridges require far more coil windings than MC moving coil cartridges. This means there’s a much greater length of metal through which the signal must travel. This, in turn, amounts to higher internal impedance values relative to MC cartridges and greater susceptibility to interference.
To stave off noise and interference, most all MM cartridges on the market use a generator shield that’s tied to the right channel ground. Pro-Ject Audio teamed up with Ortofon to develop a new MM cartridge design that does not associate the generator shield with the right channel ground.
As a result, the Pick it PRO Balanced offers high-fidelity playback that is very detailed and with low distortion. Music is exceptionally lively and robust with high dynamic range.
