"Really That Good!" Reduce Clicks and Noise on Old or Damaged Records
If you have old or damaged records that cannot be replaced by a new pressing, don't give up on listening to them. Many of your favorite albums may not be available on streaming platforms and vinyl may be the only option for enjoying the music you want to hear. Help is on the way.
There's no doubt that some noise and clicks are part of the vinyl experience. But at excessive levels these interruptions are no longer charming, and a prized record might be destined to stay on the shelf the remainder of its life. Pro-Ject saw this as a solvable problem and wants to bring those records back into rotation with the Vinyl NRS Box S3.
Just connect the output of your phono preamplifier to Vinyl NRS Box S3 and enjoy your records all over again without the excessive noise and crackles that made them unlistenable. The line-level signal from your preamp is digitized with a depth of 24 bits and a sampling rate of 96 kHz for superb reproduction. Sophisticated signal processing reduces crackles and other noise.
"What's Not to Like? I Love It."
"Those who find the noise between LP tracks annoying will appreciate the Pro-Ject Vinyl NRS Box S3. While it doesn't totally eliminate such noise, it reduces it by about 6dB – sufficient to make many iffy LPs sound like high-class pressings," reports James Michael Hughes, stereonet.org, December 22, 2022. "Oh, and it's very nicely priced, too, so what's not to like? I love it, and now realise that I can't live without it. It really is that simple – and really that good!"
De-Crackle to the Rescue
The Vinyl NRS Box S3 magic happens in the digital domain where the signal is carefully filtered so as not to interfere with the processing itself. High-frequency artifacts are used as a marker for crackles. The dedicated algorithm can now detect these peaks. You can easily adjust the sensitivity with the potentiometer on the front.
An LED gives you instant feedback on the processing. Crackle can be reduced by up to 8dB! This is a big improvement for the listening experience. And if you don‘t want to use the De-crackle function, turn the potentiometer knob all the way to the left (reducing the algorithm all the way) and you have arrived in bypass mode.
Two De-crackle intensity algorithms are available. The basic algorithm processes the signal only slightly. The advanced one processes it more heavily. Always try the basic setting first, adjusting the intensity with the potentiometer. By pressing the "Intensity" button you can engage the advanced mode if desired. The LED indicates when clicks and crackles are reduced. And your ears will hear the difference!
Vinyl Noise Reduction System (VNRS)
If you are happy with the De-crackle setting but you can still hear a lot of noise, you can activate the Vinyl Noise Reduction feature by pressing the VNRS button.
VNS works by separating the signal into two frequency bands. It is then fed to two expanders which increase the signal-to-noise ratio. There are no audible noise modulations with this technique. Your music still sounds like music without added noise. The Vinyl NRS Box S3 is able to reduce noise by up to 8dB, which makes a huge difference in listenability.
There is only one preset for the Vinyl Noise Reduction feature, and it cannot be customized in the same way as the De-crackle adjustment. But Pro-Ject figures you'll be as happy with the results in your listening room as the company was when they developed and refined this system after extensive research and testing.
Easy Connection and Setup
The Vinyl NRS Box S3 is connected between the phono preamp and your line preamp or integrated amplifier. When you turn it on, Vinyl NRS Box S3 is immediately active. When you don't want it in the signal chain, simply turn it off and the device is bypassed. The inputs are galvanically connected to the outputs for no-impact relay in bypass. If the input signal is too loud, an overload LED will alert you. You can then activate a -6dB switch for more manageable gain.
