What You Need to Know
The GS1000 Classic — Grado’s Large-Format Open-Back
Grado Labs has been making headphones in Brooklyn, New York since 1953. The company is still family-owned, now in its third generation. Their headphones are known for one thing above all else: a vivid, immediate, open presentation that puts you close to the music rather than at a clinical distance from it.
The GS1000 Classic is the second-highest model in the new Classic Series, announced in March 2026. It sits just below the GS3000 and brings together Grado’s 50mm X2 driver, a full mahogany housing, oversized G cushions, the Signature Gold headband assembly, and the Signature Silver cable in a package designed for long sessions of serious listening at home.
Grado describes the GS1000 as “open and effortless” rather than aggressive — a headphone that prioritizes scale, air, and spaciousness over forward-thrust immediacy. It is one of the few headphones at any price that consistently earns praise for its soundstage — the sense that the music exists around you rather than simply inside your head.
Open-Back Design — What That Means for You
The GS1000 Classic is an open-back headphone. This means the rear of the driver housing is not sealed — it is vented to the outside air. Open-back headphones generally produce a wider, more natural-sounding soundstage than closed-back designs because sound can breathe freely in both directions rather than bouncing inside a sealed cup.
The trade-off is leakage: people nearby will hear what you’re listening to, and external noise will come in. These are home headphones, meant for focused listening in a quiet room. They are not for commuting, offices, or shared spaces. If you want that open, natural presentation, those are the conditions that make it possible.
The 50mm X2 Driver — Grado’s Latest Platform
At the center of the GS1000 is Grado’s 50mm X2 dynamic driver — the new driver platform introduced across the entire Classic Series in 2026. It is built around a Mylar diaphragm, copper voice coil, and rare earth magnetic system. The X2 represents a further evolution of Grado’s driver architecture, refined through years of listening and development, with the goal of improving balance and clarity while preserving the lively, immediate character that defines the Grado sound.
At 50mm, the GS1000’s driver is large by headphone standards. A larger diaphragm moves more air per cycle, which contributes to deeper bass extension, greater dynamic headroom, and a presentation that feels effortless rather than strained. Driver-to-driver matching is held to a 0.05 dB tolerance — the tightest matching in the Classic Series — ensuring the left and right channels are precisely balanced.
Full Mahogany Housing — The GS1000 Signature Material
Grado has worked with mahogany longer than any other wood. The GS1000’s housing is machined from solid mahogany — a material that has become synonymous with this headphone across multiple generations. Mahogany brings warmth, tonal richness, and a natural resonance character that complements the GS1000’s large-format driver. The housing is not decorative — the choice of wood is part of how the headphone is tuned. Different woods produce different acoustic properties, and mahogany specifically contributes a quality that Grado describes as “organic and cohesive.”
G Cushions — The Key to the GS1000’s Soundstage
The GS1000 ships with Grado’s G cushions — the largest cushion in the Grado lineup. The G cushion is a large foam pad that positions the driver farther from the ear than a standard on-ear cushion. This extended distance between driver and ear is one of the primary reasons the GS1000 sounds so spacious. The driver projects sound into a small air gap around the ear rather than directly onto it, which expands the perceived width and depth of the soundstage significantly.
Like all Grado cushions, the G cushion is also a tuning element. Grado encourages listeners to experiment with other cushion types — L cushions create a more intimate, forward presentation, while G cushions give you the expansive character the GS1000 is known for. The choice is yours.
Signature Gold Headband Assembly — Premium Build at the Top of the Classic Range
The GS1000 uses the Signature Gold headband assembly — the most refined mechanical platform in the Classic Series, shared with the flagship GS3000. The system includes:
- Engraved aluminum alloy gimbals for controlled rotation and precise driver alignment
- Stainless steel height rods for structural rigidity and long-term durability
- Reinforced aluminum junction blocks for improved mechanical stability
- Genuine leather headstrap with contrasting white stitching for comfort during extended sessions
- Internal steel spring band for easy, tool-free clamping force adjustment
This headband hardware was first introduced on Grado’s Signature HP100 and represents a meaningful upgrade in build quality over previous GS1000 generations.
Signature Silver Cable — Fixed, Flexible, High-Quality
The GS1000 ships with Grado’s Signature Silver cable — engineered to be lighter, softer, and more flexible than previous Grado cables while maintaining signal integrity. All Classic Series headphones use fixed, hard-wired cables — a deliberate design choice that Grado has maintained throughout the brand’s history. If you want a detachable cable, Grado’s Signature Line is where that feature lives.
Optional XLR termination is available for listeners with balanced headphone amplifiers or DACs. The standard termination is a 6.35mm (1/4”) single-ended jack. Verify current termination options with Audio Advisor.
Hand-Built in Brooklyn, New York
Every GS1000 Classic is assembled by hand at Grado’s facility in Brooklyn, New York. The company has built headphones at this location since 1953. Each pair passes through multiple workbenches before it ships — individual assembly and inspection are a core part of how Grado maintains quality. This is not mass-production audio.
What the Experts Say
What Hi-Fi? noted that the GS1000 Classic sits among models they described as “some of our favourite wired headphones,” citing the GS3000x predecessor as a five-star award winner. They praised the X2 driver platform across the Classic Series for improved clarity and balance, and expressed curiosity about whether the 2026 updates would take these already-celebrated models to greater heights. The GS1000 retains the G-cushion geometry and mahogany housing that defined its previous generations.
ecoustics positioned the GS1000 as a headphone Grado describes as “open and effortless rather than aggressive,” suited to listeners who want a more spacious presentation than the smaller-bodied RS1 or SR325 models. They noted that the GS1000 receives the same Signature Gold headband as the flagship GS3000, signaling it is not being treated as a cut-rate option. The X2 driver platform was praised for improving consistency and refinement across the lineup while preserving what makes Grado headphones recognizable.
Reviewing a previous GS1000 generation, Wall of Sound called it “a smooth, comfortable, and eminently listenable” headphone that offers “a massive soundstage” and makes you “forget you are wearing headphones.” The reviewer praised its sense of air and ambience, noting it was light and comfortable relative to competing headphones at the price. The GS1000 Classic continues with the same mahogany housing, G-cushion geometry, and 50mm driver platform that defined those qualities.
Building Your Listening Setup? Here Are Some Great Companions.
- Headphone Amplifier. The GS1000 is easy to drive at 38 ohms and 99.8 dB sensitivity, but it scales well with quality amplification. A dedicated headphone amplifier will get more from these headphones than a laptop or phone headphone output. Browse Headphone Amplifiers.
- DAC. If you’re streaming from a computer or phone, an outboard DAC (Digital-to-Analog Converter) can meaningfully improve the signal quality going into your amp and headphones. Browse DACs.
- Alternative Grado Cushions. Swapping cushion types changes the GS1000’s presentation. L cushions make the sound more intimate and forward; G cushions (included) give you the wide, spacious character the GS1000 is known for. Experimenting is encouraged — ask us which cushions are compatible.
- Step Up to the GS3000. If you want to go further in the Classic Series, the GS3000 adds a cocobolo and aluminum housing and the 52mm X2 driver for even greater scale and bass extension. Browse Grado headphones.
- Consider the Grado Signature Line. If you want detachable cables and further refinement in materials, Grado’s Signature Line sits above the Classic Series. Browse headphones at Audio Advisor.
Features & Specifications
50mm X2 Dynamic Driver — Large Format, High Resolution
Grado’s new X2 platform uses a Mylar diaphragm, copper voice coil, and rare earth magnetic system. The 50mm diameter moves more air than smaller drivers, contributing to deeper bass extension and a greater sense of effortless scale. Driver matching is held to 0.05 dB for precise stereo balance. The X2 incorporates refined tuning developed through years of listening and feedback across Grado’s driver development program.
Open-Back Design — Maximum Soundstage
The open-back architecture allows the driver to breathe freely in both directions, creating a wider, more natural-sounding presentation than closed-back designs. The GS1000 is designed for home listening in a quiet room — not for portable or shared environments.
Full Mahogany Housing — Warmth and Tonal Richness
Machined from solid mahogany, the housing contributes warmth, tonal richness, and natural resonance to the GS1000’s character. Grado has worked with mahogany longer than any other wood and has refined its understanding of how this material interacts with the driver and cushion system over multiple generations.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are these on-ear or over-ear headphones?
The GS1000 Classic uses G cushions — Grado’s largest cushion — which sit around the ear rather than directly on it. This makes them effectively circumaural (around-ear) in their geometry, positioning the driver away from the ear to create the wide, spacious presentation the GS1000 is known for. They are not on-ear (supra-aural) in the traditional sense.
Do I need a headphone amplifier to use these?
Not necessarily — at 38 ohms and 99.8 dB sensitivity, the GS1000 Classic is relatively easy to drive. It will play from a smartphone, laptop, or DAC with a headphone output. However, the GS1000 scales noticeably with better amplification. A quality headphone amplifier will bring out more dynamics, a deeper soundstage, and greater control. We recommend pairing it with at least a capable DAC/amp combo. Call us and we can advise on what works well at your budget.
Can I use these for commuting or at the office?
No — the GS1000 is an open-back headphone. It leaks sound in both directions: people around you will hear your music, and ambient noise will come through to you. These are home listening headphones, designed for a quiet room with a good amplifier. They are not suited to shared or mobile environments.
What’s the difference between the GS1000 and the GS3000?
Both are in the Classic Series with the Signature Gold headband and G cushions. The GS3000 uses a larger 52mm X2 driver and a cocobolo wood housing with an aluminum sleeve, which gives it greater bass extension, dynamic headroom, and scale. The GS1000 uses a 50mm X2 driver and a solid mahogany housing, with a slightly narrower frequency response (8Hz–35kHz vs. 4Hz–51kHz). The GS1000 is the more accessible step while sharing the premium headband platform.
Can I change the cushions?
Yes. Grado cushions are interchangeable. The G cushions included with the GS1000 give you the widest, most spacious presentation. Fitting L cushions brings the driver closer to the ear and creates a more forward, intimate sound. Experimenting with cushion types is a well-known way to personalize your Grado’s character. Ask us which cushion types are compatible and available.
Is the cable detachable?
No. All Classic Series headphones use fixed, hard-wired cables — a deliberate Grado design choice maintained across this series. If you want a detachable cable, Grado’s Signature Line headphones offer that. The GS1000 Classic ships with a Signature Silver cable that is lighter and more flexible than previous Grado cables.
Is optional XLR termination available?
Yes. Optional XLR termination is available for listeners with balanced headphone amplifiers. The standard termination is 6.35mm (1/4”). Verify current availability and any price difference with Audio Advisor before ordering.
