What You Need to Know
What Is a Phono Cartridge?
A phono cartridge is the component at the end of your tonearm that reads the groove in your vinyl record. A tiny diamond tip — the stylus — traces the groove walls as the record spins, and the cartridge converts that physical movement into an electrical signal. That signal passes through your phono stage, gets amplified, and becomes the music you hear. Every element of a cartridge’s design affects what you hear: the stylus profile, the cantilever material, the generator type, and the precision of assembly all contribute to how accurately the original recording reaches your ears. Upgrading your cartridge is often the single most audible improvement you can make to a vinyl playback system.
The Red4 — Mid-Tier of the Prestige Series
Grado Labs has been making phono cartridges in Brooklyn, New York since 1953. The company is still family-owned, now in its third generation. The Prestige Series is the foundation of Grado’s cartridge lineup — high-output moving iron designs built for broad system compatibility, easy installation, and long-term reliability.
The Red4 sits in the middle of the Prestige Series, above the Green4 and below the Gold4. It shares the same fundamental architecture as both — the same flux-bridger moving iron generator, the same OCC copper signal path, the same die-injection molded housing, and the same user-replaceable and cross-compatible stylus system. What distinguishes the Red4 from the Green4 is the aluminum cantilever assembly: the Red4’s cantilever is produced to tighter tolerances and higher specifications than the Green4’s, resulting in improved channel separation and better retrieval of low-level detail in the groove.
This makes the Red4 a natural upgrade for listeners who already own a Green4 or an equivalent entry-level cartridge and want a meaningful performance step-up without crossing into the Gold4’s more advanced OTL cantilever architecture. It is also the right first cartridge for a listener who wants to start one rung above the entry level.
What Is a Moving Iron Cartridge?
Grado uses a moving iron (MI) design in all their cartridges, based on their patented flux-bridger generator system. In this design, the coils are stationary and a tiny iron element attached to the cantilever moves within the magnetic field generated by a twin magnet system. This keeps the moving mass extremely low — comparable to a moving coil design in that respect — while delivering the high output level and phono stage compatibility of a moving magnet cartridge.
The flux-bridger uses four separate magnetic gaps for increased efficiency and fewer coil turns. Fewer turns mean lower inductance, which makes the Red4 less sensitive to tonearm cable capacitance than many conventional moving magnets. The result is a cartridge that works with any standard MM phono input at 47kΩ without any specialized loading, step-up transformers, or high-gain circuitry.
Bonded Elliptical Diamond — Better Than Spherical
The Red4 uses a bonded elliptical diamond stylus on an aluminum cantilever. An elliptical stylus profile is longer and narrower in the direction of groove travel than a spherical (conical) tip. This means it makes better contact with the groove walls at high frequencies, tracking more accurately, generating less distortion, and retrieving more recorded detail at the same tracking force.
“Bonded” means the diamond is fixed to the cantilever shank with an adhesive bond — the appropriate and reliable construction for this level of the Prestige range. The stylus assembly is user-replaceable: it pulls off the front of the cartridge body and snaps back on without tools. Most users can do it in under a minute.
Red4 vs. Green4 — What Actually Changes
Both the Red4 and Green4 share the same published electrical specifications: 4.0mV output, 50mH inductance, 660Ω DC resistance, 47kΩ loading, 25 dB average channel separation. The difference is in the production specification and selection of the aluminum cantilever assembly. Grado hand-selects Red4 production runs to meet tighter tolerances than Green4, which in practice produces:
- Better real-world channel separation and stereo imaging
- More precise stylus alignment for consistent groove tracing
- Improved retrieval of fine low-level detail in the groove
The Red4 and Green4 are the same design philosophy at two levels of refinement — not two fundamentally different products. If you have a Green4 and want to understand what the Red4 adds, the answer is precision and consistency, not a different character.
OCC Copper Internal Signal Path
The Red4 uses OCC (Ohno Continuous Casting) copper in its internal signal path. OCC copper is produced in a continuous casting process that eliminates grain boundaries along the length of the wire, resulting in a more uniform conductor with lower resistance variation. Grado updated the 2026 Prestige Series with OCC copper as part of broader refinements to coil composition, contributing to better signal transmission and improved channel balance consistency across the lineup.
User-Replaceable Stylus — And a Clear Upgrade Path
One of the most practical features of all Grado Prestige Series cartridges is the user-replaceable stylus system. The stylus assembly pulls straight off the front of the cartridge body and snaps back on without tools in under a minute. This means:
- Stylus replacement is simple. When your stylus wears out, you replace just the stylus assembly — not the whole cartridge.
- All Prestige Series styli are cross-compatible. You can fit a Red4 stylus onto a Green4 body, a Gold4 stylus onto a Red4 body, or one of the Joseph Grado Signature styli (8MZ, MCZ, TLZ, XTZ) onto any Prestige body. The Red4 body becomes an upgrade platform as your system and tastes evolve.
Standard Mount and P-Mount Versions Available
The Red4 is available in two mounting configurations. This page covers the standard half-inch mount version, which fits the vast majority of modern tonearms using two screws through a headshell. A separate P-Mount (T4P) version is also available for turntables with compatible plug-in tonearms. If you are unsure which format your turntable uses, call us at 800-942-0220 and we can confirm before you order.
Balanced and Controlled — Grado’s Own Description
Grado describes the Red4 as delivering “a balanced and controlled presentation, with clear detail and a smooth, natural top end. The midrange carries presence and body, while low frequencies remain defined and composed.” This is consistent with what Grado’s Prestige Series has been known for across decades of ownership: a warm, musical, engaging character that is approachable rather than clinical. The Red4 is not a demanding or fatiguing cartridge. It is designed to be easy to live with across long listening sessions.
Hand-Built in Brooklyn, New York
Every Red4 is assembled by hand at Grado’s facility in Brooklyn, New York. Grado has built phono cartridges there since 1953. Every cartridge passes through individual assembly and inspection before it ships. This is not mass-production audio, even at the mid-tier of the Prestige range.
What the Experts Say

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between the Red4 and the Green4?
Both share the same electrical specifications (4.0mV, 50mH, 660Ω, 47kΩ) and the same overall Prestige architecture. The Red4’s aluminum cantilever assembly is produced and selected to tighter tolerances than the Green4’s, which in practice produces better real-world channel separation, improved stereo imaging, and more consistent retrieval of fine low-level detail from the groove. The Green4 is the entry point; the Red4 is the step up within the same design philosophy.
What is the difference between the Red4 and the Gold4?
The Gold4 is a more significant step. It adds a four-piece OTL (Optimized Transmission Line) cantilever — a Grado-proprietary multi-section design that suppresses resonances at the junctions between sections — a machined turned generator for lower distortion and greater transparency, and coils wound with ultra high purity copper wire using techniques developed for Grado’s flagship Lineage Series. The Red4 uses a standard aluminum cantilever; the Gold4 uses the OTL construction. The Gold4 is the top of the Prestige range.
What phono stage do I need?
Any standard MM phono input at 47kΩ will work — including built-in phono stages in integrated amplifiers and receivers. The Red4 outputs 4.0mV, which is standard for moving magnet cartridges. No step-up transformer or MC gain is needed. If your amplifier has a PHONO or MM input, the Red4 is compatible with it.
Can I replace the stylus myself?
Yes. The stylus assembly snaps off the front of the cartridge body and snaps back on without tools in under a minute. When the stylus wears out — typically after 500–1,000 hours of play — you replace just the stylus, not the whole cartridge.
Can I upgrade to a better stylus on the Red4 body?
Yes — all Grado Prestige Series styli are interchangeable. You can fit a Gold4 stylus or one of the Joseph Grado Signature styli (8MZ, MCZ, TLZ, XTZ) onto the Red4 body for a performance upgrade without replacing the whole cartridge. This is one of the most cost-effective upgrade paths in analog audio. Ask us which stylus option makes sense for your system.
Does it work with my turntable?
The Red4 (standard mount) fits any turntable tonearm with a standard half-inch headshell — the format used by the vast majority of modern turntables from Pro-Ject, Rega, Audio-Technica, Denon, and others. At 6g weight and 20 μm/mN compliance, it is well-suited to the medium-mass tonearms found on most entry and mid-level turntables. Call us at 800-942-0220 if you want to confirm compatibility with your specific table.
Is a P-Mount version available?
Yes — a separate Red4 P-Mount (T4P) version is available for turntables with compatible plug-in tonearms. This page covers the standard half-inch mount version. If you are not sure which format your turntable uses, call us and we can confirm.
What tracking force should I use?
Grado recommends 1.6–1.9g. Use a digital stylus force gauge to set tracking force accurately. Start at the midpoint (approximately 1.75g) and adjust by ear. Incorrect tracking force will degrade performance and accelerate stylus wear regardless of cartridge quality.
Where is it made?
By hand, in Brooklyn, New York. Grado Labs has assembled phono cartridges at their Brooklyn facility since 1953. Every Red4 passes through individual assembly and inspection before it ships.
