A Reference Amplifier with Legendary DNA
If you follow high-end audio, you’ve probably heard of the Parasound Halo JC 1. That monoblock amplifier was introduced in 2003 and went on to become one of the most acclaimed power amplifiers in audio history — Stereophile named it Amplifier of the Year and kept it on their Class A Recommended Components list for an extraordinary fifteen consecutive years. The “JC” in the name stands for John Curl, the legendary circuit designer who has been creating amplifiers for Parasound since 1989.
The Halo JC 5 is Parasound’s answer to a question their customers kept asking: could all that JC 1 performance be packed into a single stereo chassis for less money and less space? The answer is yes. The JC 5 takes the core circuit design, topology, and component philosophy of two JC 1 monoblocks and combines them into one 73-pound amplifier — at roughly two-thirds the price of a pair of JC 1s.
A power amplifier is the component in your system responsible for taking the small audio signal from your preamp and amplifying it with enough force to drive your speakers. The JC 5 does this with 400 watts per channel into 8 ohms, 600 watts into 4 ohms, and a staggering 1,200 watts in bridged mono mode. It delivers 90 amps of peak current per channel and remains stable with speaker impedance dips down to 1.5 ohms. In practical terms, this means the JC 5 can drive virtually any loudspeaker ever made, including the most demanding, current-hungry designs, without breaking a sweat.
What Makes the JC 5 Sound So Good?
The JC 5 operates in pure Class A for its first 12 watts per channel. Class A is widely regarded as the purest-sounding amplifier topology, but it generates considerable heat and is inefficient at higher power levels. For most people, 12 watts covers the majority of their actual listening volume — so for most of the time you’re listening, the JC 5 is running in its sweetest, most refined operating mode. When the music demands more power, the amp smoothly transitions into Class AB, extending effortlessly to its full 400-watt rating.
The signal path is direct-coupled, meaning there are no capacitors or inductors between the input and your speakers that could add coloration or limit bass response. The result is bass extension all the way down to 5 Hz — that’s well below what most subwoofers can reproduce. The circuit uses the same topology as the JC 1: JFET input transistors (ultra-low-noise Toshiba parts that Parasound has stockpiled, as Toshiba no longer manufactures them), MOSFET driver transistors, and 24 beta-matched Sanken bipolar output transistors that switch at 60 MHz — fast enough to track even the most complex musical transients without distortion.
The dual-mono design goes all the way from the transformer windings to the speaker terminals. Each channel has its own independent power supply for its input, driver, and output stages. The massive 1.7 kVA toroidal transformer uses independent windings per channel, and the total filter capacitance is enormous: 8,880 µF of Nichicon Gold Tune caps for the input stages, plus 132,000 µF of Rubycon caps for the output stages. The input stage rails run 10 volts above the output stage rails — an engineering detail borrowed directly from the JC 1 that prevents voltage sag under heavy loads, keeping distortion vanishingly low even during demanding passages.

Who Is the JC 5 Best For?
You want reference-quality amplification without the cost, space, and complexity of two separate monoblock amplifiers.
You own demanding, current-hungry speakers and need an amp with the power and stability to drive them effortlessly.
You value neutrality and transparency — you want to hear your recordings, not your amplifier.
You’re building a no-compromise two-channel system and want an amplifier you can keep for decades.
You listen at moderate volumes much of the time and want the sonic benefits of pure Class A operation during everyday listening.
How Does It Connect to Your System?
The JC 5 provides balanced XLR inputs (with professional Neutrik locking connectors) and unbalanced RCA inputs (Vampire 24k gold-plated jacks). Balanced connections are recommended for the lowest noise, but both inputs deliver excellent performance. A rear-panel switch selects between balanced and unbalanced operation.
Each channel has its own gain control knob with a 29 dB range. This is a valuable feature — it lets you fine-tune the input sensitivity to match your preamp’s output, which can help optimize dynamics and minimize noise in your system.
RCA loop outputs pass the signal through to additional amplifiers, making bi-amping or multi-room setups straightforward. The custom CHK Infinium “propeller” speaker binding posts are 24k gold-plated, accept spade lugs up to 16mm wide, banana plugs, or bare wire up to 7 gauge. The amp includes 12V trigger in/out and audio-sensing auto-on for integration with your preamp or home theater system.
Keep in mind: The JC 5 is a dedicated power amplifier — it does not include a volume control, source selection, or built-in DAC. You’ll need a separate preamp or processor to control it. Parasound’s own Halo JC 2 BP is the ideal companion. If you need help choosing, give us a call.

Frequently Asked Questions
How does the JC 5 compare to a pair of JC 1 monoblocks?
The JC 5 shares the same core circuit topology and many of the same components as the JC 1, including the same JFET/MOSFET/bipolar transistor architecture. The JC 1 has a larger transformer (1.9 kVA vs. 1.7 kVA), more output transistors per channel (18 vs. 12), and higher peak current. In practice, according to Parasound founder Richard Schram, the overall sonic DNA is the same. The JC 5 offers the convenience of two channels in one chassis at roughly two-thirds the price of a pair of JC 1s. For most systems and speakers, the JC 5 provides the same reference-quality sound.
Do I need a preamp to use the JC 5?
Yes. The JC 5 is a dedicated power amplifier with no volume control or source selection. You’ll need a separate preamp or processor. The Parasound Halo JC 2 BP is the natural partner for a full JC-series reference system, while the Halo P 6 is an excellent and more affordable option. Call us at 800-942-0220 if you need help choosing.
What speakers does the JC 5 work well with?
Essentially any speaker on the market. Reviewers have tested the JC 5 with a wide range, from efficient DeVore Fidelity O/93 monitors (93 dB sensitivity) to demanding MartinLogan electrostatic hybrids to 4-ohm, low-sensitivity tower speakers. The 90 amps of peak current and stability down to 1.5 ohms means the JC 5 can handle speakers that would cause lesser amplifiers to shut down or distort.
What do the gain control knobs on the rear panel do?
Each channel has an adjustable gain control with a 29 dB range. This lets you fine-tune how much the JC 5 amplifies the signal from your preamp. Lowering the gain slightly can reduce background noise and let you use more of your preamp’s volume range, which often improves dynamics. Parasound recommends setting the gain so that your preamp’s volume sits around the midpoint for your normal listening level.
Can I bridge the JC 5 into mono?
Yes. In bridged mono mode, the JC 5 delivers 1,200 watts into 8 ohms. This is ideal for powering a single demanding speaker or subwoofer, or you could use two JC 5 units in bridged mono for a stereo pair with extraordinary power. Note that bridged 4-ohm operation is not recommended.
How heavy is it, and will it fit in my rack?
The JC 5 weighs 73 pounds (95 pounds with shipping packaging). It occupies 4U of rack space (about 7 inches tall) and is 20 inches deep. Rack mount hardware is included. Make sure your rack or shelf can support the weight — this is a substantial amplifier. Rear carry handles help with positioning.
Does the JC 5 run hot?
The JC 5 runs warm due to its high-bias Class A operation, but reviewers consistently note it runs cooler than expected for an amp of this power. The heatsinks along both sides of the chassis dissipate heat effectively. Parasound recommends leaving adequate ventilation space above and around the amp. The front panel includes a high-temperature warning LED, though reviewers report never seeing it activate during normal use.
How long does the JC 5 need to break in?
Several reviewers noted the JC 5 sounded very good right out of the box but continued to open up and improve over the first 100+ hours of use. This is typical for high-end amplifiers with large capacitors and tightly matched components. Even before full break-in, the amp performs at a high level.
What’s the difference between the JC 5 and the Halo A 21+?
The A 21+ is Parasound’s top Halo-series (non-JC) stereo amp, delivering 300 watts per channel at roughly half the price of the JC 5. It’s an exceptional amplifier in its own right. The JC 5 steps up with more power (400W), more current (90A vs. 60A peak), higher-grade components (Nichicon Gold Tune and Rubycon caps, Toshiba JFETs), true dual-mono construction, and 12 watts of pure Class A operation. If your budget allows, the JC 5 offers a meaningful step toward reference performance.
What warranty does the JC 5 come with?
