What Is a Preamplifier — and Why Does This One Matter?
A preamplifier is the hub of your audio system. It's where you select your source — your DAC, CD player, streamer, phono stage, or tape deck — adjust the volume, and send a clean, controlled signal on to your power amplifier. A preamp doesn't amplify the way a power amplifier does; it routes and shapes the signal before amplification, which means everything that happens in the preamp stage has a direct effect on what you ultimately hear.
A mediocre preamplifier adds its own noise and subtle coloration to the signal — a veiling of detail, a slight hardness in the upper frequencies, or a congestion of low-level information you might not even notice until you hear what a great preamp can do instead. A great preamp gets out of the way. It passes your source's signal to your amplifier with as little interference as possible, revealing what your other components are truly capable of.
The Parasound Halo JC 2 BP is widely regarded as one of the finest preamplifiers available below a very high price threshold. The dual-mono architecture runs separate left and right channel circuits on completely independent boards, each surrounded by 3/8-inch thick aluminum shielding. Stereophile's John Atkinson — who had used a Mark Levinson No.380S as his personal reference preamplifier for a decade and was not easily moved — reviewed the JC 2 at length and ultimately adopted it as his new long-term reference.
