What You Need to Know
What is the NAD C 538, and what does it do?
The NAD C 538 is a dedicated CD player. Its job is simple: read your discs cleanly, then send the music to your amplifier with as much detail and as little noise as possible.
NAD has been building CD players for decades. They know where to spend a little extra on a better part — and where it doesn’t matter. The C 538 is the result of that experience at a price most music lovers can live with.
It plays standard CDs, CD-R, and CD-RW discs. It also reads MP3 and WMA files burned to disc, so you can fit hours of music on a single CD-R. You get both analog outputs (for any stereo amp) and digital outputs (if you want to use an external DAC).
Why does it matter? How does it improve your listening?
A CD player has three jobs: spin the disc accurately, convert the digital signal cleanly, and pass the music along without adding noise. The C 538 was engineered with all three in mind.
Start with the transport. NAD built the C 538 on a reinforced steel and non-resonant plastic chassis with the drive mounted on steel rails. The point is to keep the disc steady so the laser reads it correctly the first time, with fewer tracking errors.
Next is the DAC stage. A DAC — short for digital-to-analog converter — is the chip that turns the 1s and 0s on the disc into the analog signal your amplifier can use. The C 538 uses a Wolfson 24-bit DAC paired with precise digital clocking. Precise clocking matters because tiny timing errors (called jitter) blur the sound.
Finally, the analog stage uses audio-grade op-amps to buffer the signal without adding noise or distortion. NAD designed the circuit board with short signal paths, which is another way of keeping the music clean on its way out.
What are reviewers saying?
What Hi-Fi? awarded the C 538 a four-star rating, calling it “a solid CD player worthy of serious consideration” in their original review. The magazine praised the player’s “informative and organised sound” and ease of use, while noting that it lacks some sonic authority compared with class leaders. They concluded that buyers drawn to the NAD sound and aesthetic will find it worth considering.

Andrew Dewhirst at FutureAudiophile.com spent extended time listening to CDs on the C 538 and recommended it without hesitation. He called the build quality fantastic and said the player runs silently outside of the disc tray opening. He described the sound as crisp and neutral, and recommended the player to anyone shopping for a dedicated CD spinner.

Art+Tech at SoundStageXperience.com tested the C 538 with Miles Davis’s Kind of Blue on gold CD. The reviewer reported a rich, realistic soundstage with new depth, particularly singling out Jimmy Cobb’s drum kit — saying the weight of each stick strike and the bite of cymbal hits came through with unusual presence.

Who is this player best for?
You have a CD collection you love and want a dedicated player that does the format justice.
You’re replacing an old player from the ’90s or 2000s and want a modern, reliable upgrade without spending a fortune.
You want a clean, simple component that fits the classic NAD look and pairs naturally with NAD amplifiers.
You want flexibility — built-in analog out for direct connection, plus digital outs if you ever add an external DAC.
You play burned discs (MP3/WMA mixes) along with standard CDs and want one player that handles both.
How does it connect to your system?
The C 538 is straightforward to set up. On the back you’ll find stereo RCA analog outputs — these are the standard red and white jacks you’ve probably used your whole life. Run a stereo interconnect from these to any input on your amplifier or receiver, and you’re done.
If you’d rather use an external DAC or an AV receiver’s built-in DAC, the C 538 also has coaxial and optical (Toslink) digital outputs. In that setup, the C 538 acts as a transport and lets the external DAC handle the digital-to-analog conversion.
Keep in mind, this is a CD player — it needs a stereo amplifier or integrated amp to drive your speakers. If you don’t already have one, give us a call at 800-942-0220 and we’ll help you build a system around it.
Pairs Well With
Building a system around the C 538? Here are some great companions.
- NAD integrated amplifiers — The C 538 is a natural match for NAD’s own Classic Series amps. Pair it with a NAD integrated amplifier for a system that looks and sounds like it was built together — because it was.
- Stereo amplifiers and integrated amps from other brands — The C 538 works beautifully with any quality stereo amp. Browse our full lineup of integrated amplifiers and stereo receivers.
- External DACs — Want to upgrade the sound later? Use the C 538’s coaxial or optical digital output into a standalone digital-to-analog converter.
- Quality interconnects — A good RCA interconnect from the C 538 to your amp protects everything you paid for in the player.
- Equipment racks and isolation — A stable platform reduces vibration reaching the disc transport. See our audio racks and isolation components.
Features & Specifications
Disc Playback That Just Works
The C 538 plays standard CDs, plus CD-R and CD-RW discs. Burned MP3 and WMA files are supported too, so a single CD-R can hold up to 10 hours of music — handy for road trips, parties, or background listening.
Reinforced Transport for Steady Tracking
The disc mechanism sits on reinforced steel rails inside a chassis built from heavy-gauge steel and non-resonant plastic. Over 30 fasteners lock the assembly together. The goal is simple: keep the disc precisely aligned so the laser reads cleanly with fewer tracking errors.
Wolfson 24-bit DAC with Precision Clocking
The DAC stage is built around a Wolfson 24-bit chip — Wolfson is a well-regarded name in audio-grade digital-to-analog converters. NAD pairs it with high-precision digital clocking. (Clocking refers to the timing pulses that govern when each digital sample gets converted; tighter timing means less jitter and a cleaner analog output.)
Clean Analog Output Stage
Audio op-amps buffer the analog signal on its way out of the player. Multi-layer printed circuit boards with surface-mount components let NAD route signal paths very short, which helps keep noise and distortion low.
Custom Power Supply
An active power supply provides separate regulated voltage rails for the transport, the digital section, the analog section, and the display and control circuits. Isolating these stages helps prevent digital noise from leaking into the analog output.
Flexible Output Options
Stereo RCA analog output for direct connection to any amp. Coaxial and optical digital outputs for use with an external DAC or AV receiver.
Useful Playback Features
Random play, programmed playback, and full repeat options (track, file, folder, whole disc, or A-B segment). The dimmable dot-matrix display shows track number, track time, disc time, and remaining time. The included infrared remote duplicates the front-panel controls and adds the advanced playback modes.
Energy-Efficient Design
Standby power draw is under 0.5W and idle power is under 7.5W, so the C 538 sips electricity when it’s sitting on your rack.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will the C 538 play SACDs?
No. The C 538 plays standard CDs, CD-R, and CD-RW discs (including MP3 and WMA files burned to them). It does not play SACDs or DVDs. If you want SACD playback, give us a call and we’ll point you to a player that handles both formats.
Can I use the DAC inside the C 538 for my computer or TV?
No. The C 538’s digital-to-analog converter only handles the signal coming off the disc you put in the tray. It has no digital inputs, so it can’t accept signals from a computer, TV, or streamer. If you want a player that does both, ask us about other options.
Does it have a headphone jack?
The C 538 does not include a headphone output. To listen on headphones, you’ll want a separate headphone amplifier or an integrated amp with a headphone jack. We carry plenty of both — give us a call if you’d like a recommendation.
Will the C 538 work with my existing amplifier?
Yes. The C 538 has standard stereo RCA analog outputs that connect to virtually any stereo amplifier, integrated amp, or receiver with line-level inputs. If you’re unsure about your setup, call us at 800-942-0220 and we’ll help you confirm compatibility.
What’s the difference between using the analog and digital outputs?
Use the analog (RCA) outputs to send sound directly from the C 538 to your amp — the player handles the digital-to-analog conversion. Use the digital outputs (coaxial or optical) if you want an external DAC or AV receiver to do the conversion instead. Most listeners stick with the analog output.
Is the disc tray quiet during playback?
According to FutureAudiophile.com reviewer Andrew Dewhirst, the C 538 runs silently outside of the disc tray opening and closing. The reinforced transport and damped chassis are designed to keep mechanical noise out of your listening room.
How long is the warranty?
The NAD C 538 comes with a 2-year warranty covering parts and labor when purchased from an authorized dealer like Audio Advisor. Full warranty details are available from NAD.
What do I need besides the C 538 to play music?
You’ll need a stereo amplifier (or integrated amp or receiver), a pair of speakers, a stereo RCA interconnect cable, and speaker cables. If you’re putting together a system from scratch, give us a call — that’s exactly what we do every day.
