    Product Features

    Power Amplifier

John Curl Class A/AB Design — The HINT 6's power section uses the same direct-coupled circuit topology found in Parasound's acclaimed separate amplifiers. It delivers 160 watts per channel into 8 ohms (240W into 4 ohms) with high-bias Class A operation at normal listening levels, switching to A/AB only at higher output. This means you get the sweetness of Class A sound for everyday listening, with the headroom to handle dynamic peaks and demanding speakers.

Serious Internal Build — Under the hood you'll find an oversized shielded toroidal power transformer, a dual-mono power supply layout, 40,000µF of filter capacitance, matched JFET input stages, MOSFET driver stages, and 12 high-voltage, high-current bipolar output transistors. The 45-amp peak current capacity per channel means the HINT 6 can drive difficult speaker loads with ease. The damping factor is greater than 800 at 20 Hz, keeping tight control of bass response.

    Preamplifier & DAC

Low-Noise Volume Control — The Burr-Brown analog resistor ladder eliminates mechanical contacts from the signal path, providing quieter operation, better channel matching, and precise volume adjustment from 0 to 99. You can program a default turn-on volume and save a "favorite" level for one-button recall from the remote.

High-Resolution DAC — The ESS Sabre32 Reference (ES9018K2M) handles PCM up to 384 kHz/32-bit and native DSD256 through USB, and PCM up to 192 kHz/24-bit through coaxial or optical. That covers essentially every streaming service, hi-res download format, and disc-based source available today.

Versatile Phono Stage — Supports MM (47kΩ, 41 dB gain), MC at 100Ω (54 dB gain), or MC at 47kΩ for cartridges and moving iron designs from Soundsmith and Grado that prefer higher impedance. The gain increase over the original model means even low-output MC cartridges are well supported.

High-Current Headphone Amplifier — Built around the Texas Instruments TPA6120A, driving headphones rated up to 600 ohms with a 10-ohm output impedance. The 3.5mm jack on the front panel auto-mutes the speaker and preamp outputs when headphones are plugged in.

    Bass Management & Home Theater

Built-In Crossovers — Independent high-pass and low-pass crossovers with adjustable frequency settings and a 12 dB/octave slope. Front-panel sub level knob for easy adjustment. One XLR and two RCA subwoofer outputs.

Home Theater Bypass — Routes your surround receiver's front left, right, and sub channels directly to the HINT 6's power amplifier, completely bypassing the preamp section. This means the HINT 6's superior power amp drives your best speakers for movies while your receiver handles surround processing. When you switch back to a stereo input, the HINT 6 becomes your dedicated two-channel amp again.

    Design & Build

Premium Construction — 33 pounds of solid build with a steel chassis, sand-blasted aluminum end caps, subtle gold highlights, ball-bearing volume knob, and heavy-duty 24k gold-plated 5-way speaker binding posts. Available in black or silver. Fits a standard 19" rack at 3U height (with optional HRA-3 rack-mount kit).

Backlit Remote Control — Full-featured remote with discrete source buttons, volume, mute, tone bypass, dim, and favorite-volume recall. Backlit buttons make it easy to use in a darkened room.

    What Are Reviewers Saying?

The HINT 6 has been extensively reviewed, and the consensus is remarkably consistent: it offers an unusual combination of power, features, and musical performance at its price.

Ken Micallef reviewed the HINT 6 for Stereophile (May 2019) and tested it with DeVore O/93s, Klipsch Heresy IIIs, Spendor A7s, and Quad S-2s. He praised the amp's versatility with different speakers, highlighting its sonic cohesiveness and dynamic capability. Stereophile included the HINT 6 in its 2022 Recommended Components list.

Micallef tested the HINT 6 with four different speaker pairs and found it versatile with all of them, describing the sound as upfront, slightly cool, and dynamic. He noted that with the DeVore O/93s, the HINT 6 delivered control, nuance, and an always-in-service-to-the-music quality. Parasound earned a Recommended rating and later inclusion in Stereophile's Recommended Components list.

    — Ken Micallef, Stereophile, May 2019 (Recommended Component, 2022)

What Hi-Fi? (December 2018) described the HINT 6 as confident and enthusiastic, noting that it tracks dynamic sweeps with conviction and never sounds stressed at high volumes. They found the tonal balance open and even-handed, with deep and tuneful bass, articulate midrange, and crisp highs that avoid harshness.

The reviewer found the HINT 6 confident and enthusiastic, praising its ability to follow individual musical strands while tying everything together coherently. Bass was deep and tuneful, the midrange articulate, and highs crisp without harshness. The phono stage retained much of the line stage's fine character.

    — What Hi-Fi?, December 2018

Michael Lavorgna at Twittering Machines (January 2021) emphasized the HINT 6's ability to deliver clean, clear power and described the phono stage as wonderful. When comparing it to the Hegel H95, he noted that the HINT 6 produced a greater sense of dynamics, drama, and scale.

Lavorgna praised the HINT 6's clean, clear power delivery and its impressive built-in phono stage, comparing it favorably to his own outboard Parasound Zphono. He noted that it produced a greater sense of dynamics, drama, and scale compared to the Hegel H95, and called it easy to recommend.

    — Michael Lavorgna, Twittering Machines, January 2021

    W. Jennings at ecoustics (June 2022) was particularly impressed by the HINT 6's handling of orchestral music and midrange resolution. He concluded that it represents one of the best values in the high-end amplifier category at its price.

Jennings was impressed by the HINT 6's orchestral rendering and midrange resolution, noting exceptional instrument separation and vocal placement. He found it smooth without ever sounding dull, and concluded it represents one of the best values in the high-end amplifier category.

    — W. Jennings, ecoustics, June 2022

The Audiophilia review (2023) called the HINT 6 "as close to a universally recommendable amplifier" as the reviewer had experienced — noting that Parasound wisely omitted built-in networking features, which should help it remain relevant for many years without becoming outdated.

Geiger called the HINT 6 "as close to a universally recommendable amplifier" as he's experienced, praising its ability to serve any type of music and any listener. He noted its intentional omission of networking features as a wise design choice for long-term relevance.

    — Max Geiger, Audiophilia, 2023 (Thoroughly Recommended)

Drew Gagliano at The Audio Beatnik (August 2019) did note that when pushed to very high volume with certain bookshelf speakers, the upper treble could sound slightly hard, and preferred the HINT 6 at low to moderate listening levels where it provided welcome body and richness. However, he concluded that it would be difficult to match the HINT 6's combination of features, power, and performance at this price.

Gagliano praised the HINT 6's smooth and engaging sound and flexibility, singling out the volume control as one of the best he'd used. He noted that at lower listening levels it provided particularly rich, full-bodied sound. He concluded that matching the HINT 6's combination of features and performance at this price would be very difficult.

    — Drew Gagliano, The Audio Beatnik, August 2019

Maurice Jeffries at Positive Feedback (June 2019) found the HINT 6 reproduced all types of music with remarkable confidence, consistency, and grace, and described pairing it with Magnepan 1.7i speakers as "downright revelatory."

Jeffries paired the HINT 6 with Magnepan 1.7i panels and found the combination revelatory. He noted that Parasound continues to recalibrate accepted price-vs.-performance expectations in the high end, and praised the amp's remarkable confidence, consistency, and grace across all genres.

    — Maurice Jeffries, Positive Feedback, June 2019

Germany's Fidelity-Online reviewer tested the HINT 6 and reported that a family member walked in, listened briefly, and declared it sounded "just like a concert." The reviewer concluded that finding an amplifier performing this well at this price would require searching with a magnifying glass.

    — Stefan Gawlick, Fidelity-Online (Germany), November 2019

The AudioKey reviewers found the HINT 6 an astounding value, describing it as an attractively priced Swiss Army knife that they couldn't think of another product they'd recommend above in the $3,000 range. Build quality, the volume control, and the phono preamp all earned special praise.

    — AudioKey Reviews, December 2022

Selley found the HINT 6 to be an evolution that does everything a little bit better than the original, and compared it favorably to the Naim Supernait 3 at a similar price. He particularly praised the bass management system and the HINT 6's ability to serve both stereo purists and home theater users.

    — Ed Selley, AVforums, December 2019 (Recommended)
